During dinner, there is very little conversation. We both scarf down our meals, and I think it has something to do with the desire in the air. The chemistry between the two of us is so thick you could cut it with a knife. She senses something is up. She’s being quiet, waiting for me to tell her what’s next.

She wants me, and it’s harder than I thought it would be to sit here at this table with her, watching her eat, when all I can do is think about making love to her for the first time. I’ve taken my time. I wanted her to know this wasn’t just some fling for me. I wanted her to feel my need for her before we took that final step.

It’s not been without difficulty to hold out. My tongue has traced every inch of her creamy soft skin, and my fingertips ache to feel her softness and her taste. She tastes like mine, but tonight we’re going to be one. Connected in a way we’ve never been before. I’ve imagined it so many times over the years.

In a way, I’m glad that it took us until now to get together. Sure, I curse the time we lost, but I don’t know that I would have been ready for her. I’d like to think that I would have realized the treasure she is, but I can’t be certain. I mean, I thought she was stuck up and assumed she thought she was better than everyone else.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

She was mourning a profound loss, and I was the dumbass who couldn’t see that it was pain, not indifference. So, yeah, tonight, it’s a night that’s ten years in the making, but we’re finally both ready. I’m ready to be hers in every way she can think of, and my hope is that she feels the same.

“I’m so full,” Charlotte says, dropping her napkin to the table. “Thank you for dinner.”

“You’re welcome.” I stand to clear the plates, and she stands to help. “I’ve got this. Why don’t you go grab your bag and take a shower, or change, or whatever you want to do before we settle in for the night.”

“I’m not really tired,” she confesses.

“Not bed, baby. Just settled. We’re going to relax.”

She reaches and kisses me on the cheek. “That sounds perfect.” She rushes back outside to collect her bag while I clean up. I hear the front door open and close, so I glance over to see her with her overnight bag on her way to my room. Seeing her in my space and seeing how comfortable she is, causes an ache inside of me. I want her here all the time. Not just here but with me. I don’t care where we are as long as we are together. I’d follow her anywhere, and the idea of that no longer scares me. I’m not sure that it ever did. I was uncertain at first how this was going to go, but now I know. It’s going to go with me loving her every day of forever.

She’s ready.

We’re ready.

I finish up in the kitchen, grab two bottles of water, and turn out the lights. I make sure the front door is locked before heading upstairs to bed. When I reach my bedroom, I can see the soft glow of the lamp as I push open the door. I expect to find Charlotte in the shower or changed and under the covers with the remote in her hand, looking for what we’re going to watch, but that’s not what I find at all.

“Charlie.” Her name is a rasp from my lips as I take in the sight before me. She’s lying on top of the covers in a little purple number. It’s lots of lace and skimpy as fuck, and it looks incredible on her.

“You said that all I had to do was ask, right?”

I swallow hard. Little does she know I was going to give her this anyway, but we’ll do it her way. At the very moment, she looks sexy as fuck, and confident in her own skin. She’s no longer hiding from me. From what we are and what we will be. Something has changed. I don’t know what it is, but I’m grateful.

She’s all in.

“That’s right,” I finally answer.

“I want you. I want all of you, Spencer. I don’t want a watered-down version of what you think I want. I want you. I want us.”

“Okay.”

A slow, sexy smile brightens her big blue eyes. “If I would have known it would be this easy, I would have asked weeks ago.”

“You weren’t ready to ask weeks ago,” I tell her as I strip out of my shirt, tossing it across the room to the dirty clothes basket.
