I make a face. “I told you guys to name him D’Artagnan. I get all the ass.”

I’m met with dry looks. “Because that’s what we want for our child,” Jaylin reminds me, and I point to Kirby.

“He does,” I accuse, and Kirby laughs.

“Not at all, because then he’ll knock up some dumbass and have to deal with her until he gets custody of his kid,” he says, reminding me of his own story.

“Hey, it worked out great for you,” I say, and his eyes fall on his wife. He gives her a wide grin, kissing her nose, and I hate how jealous I am of them.

Of their perfect life.

“It did, but we still aren’t naming him that,” he says just as the back door slides open.

We all look over as Sawyer Anderson enters without knocking. He never does. He’s about my height, built like a truck, but he looks like a surfer. Long blond hair and ice-blue eyes. His brother plays for the Nashville Assassins, and he’s been friends with Owen Adler his whole life. I had no choice but to like him when he came to the team.

Everyone else does.

“Hey, bro,” I call to him as he goes right for the fridge.

“Please help yourself,” Jaylin says to him, and he sends her a toothy grin. He’s missing his front teeth after getting hit with a puck right in the mouth during his first preseason game. “Are your teeth still not in?”

He shakes his head. “Nope, and I’m starting to get used to the whistling noise when I talk, so I don’t know if I’ll wear them when they show up.”

“I love the whistling noise,” I tell him, and he laughs as he comes toward us with a beer and three pouches of applesauce. He sits beside me, handing one to each girl before opening his. “Where is mine?”

His blue eyes settle on me. “In the fridge.”

“Jackass,” I say, and Celeste leans forward, giving me a squirt of her applesauce. “That’s why you’re my girl, huh?”

She nods. “Yup.”

“What are you doing tonight?” Sawyer asks me. “I was gonna hit the beach bar. They’re having a blowout since they’re closing down for the winter.”

I sigh deeply. I could go. We don’t have practice tomorrow, and Lord knows I could use a night of drinking and bringing someone home. But I like where I am, too. “I don’t know.”

I feel Jaylin watching me, but I ignore her as Sawyer says, “Bro, I need a wingman.”

“Maybe,” I say, and then I glance over to Jaylin. “Yes, Jay?”

She shakes her head. “Nothing.”

“You sure?”

“Yes,” she says, but I know she’s lying.

Just then, the back door opens once more, and Owen strolls in. He looks at all of us and then throws his hands up. “So, I guess my invite to hang wasn’t extended?”

Sawyer shrugs. “I had no food.”

“I came to play with the girls,” I say, and Celeste hugs my head.

“They weren’t invited,” Kirby tells him, and Jaylin laughs.

Usually, this is the hang-out spot. Everyone comes to Kirby and Jaylin’s. For one, there is always food, and for two, the kids are cute. We play video games, eat, and even play cards together. Well, we haven’t played cards for a long time. The last time we played was before I slept with my teammate’s best friend and ruined all that. Now, we don’t see Thatcher or Audrina socially anymore. It’s all my fault and something I’m not proud of. The night wasn’t even that great, nothing like how it was with Tennessee.

Great. Now I’m thinking of Tennessee.

Not that that’s a new thing or whatever…

“I figured. Hey Jay, do you have Angie’s neem oil? There is a bug on Angie’s plant, and she’s currently on the porch screaming and crying that she can’t find her oil,” Owen whines, sounding every bit how I know Angie is sounding right now. I laugh at him, thankful for the distraction.

Jaylin nods. “Oh, I do. Hold on.”

She gets up, and Owen leans on the counter. “What’re y’all doing tonight?”

I shrug as Sawyer says, “Trying to get Dart out, but he’s being difficult.”

Owen snorts at that, and I set him with a look that has him pressing his lips together. He’s the only one who knows about Tennessee. Though, I suspect he told Angie, who told Jaylin, given the way she was looking at me. “Why don’t you want to go out? You still talking to Andie?”

I make a face. “God, no. That was a one-and-done.”

Which is what Tennessee was supposed to be, but I forgot that in the middle of hat trick number two.

“Didn’t you date her for like a week?” Sawyer asks me, and I shrug.

“Okay, it was a week thing.”

Jaylin rolls her eyes as she hands Owen the bottle of oil. “Have you called her?” she asks me, and I snap my gaze to Owen, but he is running out the back door without even saying goodbye.
