“Okay, I’ll call Stacie and see if she can watch Luna.”
“About that...”
“What’s wrong?”
“I went by Rosie’s and saw Jud.” He came over and kissed me. “Stacie was there too, so I invited them to come by.”
“To the party?”
“Yeah, I thought they might enjoy it.”
“And what’d they say?”
“They were all for it.”
“Really?” While we were a few weeks late, we’d made it to the zoo with her and even went to the movies a couple of times. She seemed to really enjoy getting out, but I didn’t get the feeling that she was ready for a party—especially one at the clubhouse. “Are you sure Stacie’s ready for that?”
“No, but it might be good for her.”
“Yeah, as long as Duggar and Goose behave themselves.”
They were known for using their boyish charms to pick up the ladies, so I wasn’t surprised when Lawson replied, “Can’t promise anything there.”
“I was afraid you were going to say that.” I giggled, and then reality hit. “So, what are we going to do about Luna?”
“I was thinking we could ask Star or Nikki to come by.”
Both Star and Nikki loved Luna. They couldn’t help but dote on her, and they were great ladies with good heads on their shoulders. I trusted them both to take care of her, so I told him, “Yeah, that would be great. If one of them can do it.”
“I’ll give them a call and see if they can work it into their schedule.”
“That’d be great.”
Three days later, I was on the back of Lawson’s bike, and we were headed to the clubhouse. I felt a little guilty about leaving Luna behind, but she was with Nikki, and Luna couldn’t have been happier about spending the night with her. I’d been to the clubhouse several times over the past few months and I’d gotten to know most of the guys, but I was still a little anxious. I’d never actually been to a club party and didn’t know what to expect.
My heart was racing as we pulled up through the gate. Just as I expected, the place was packed. There were cars and bikes parked everywhere, but Lawson managed to find us a spot in the back. We both got off his bike, and when Lawson got over to me, he smiled and asked, “You ready?”
“As ready as I’m gonna be.”
“Hey.” He took my hand in his. “Don’t be nervous. You girls are gonna have a great time.”
“I’ll feel better after I have a drink.”
“Then, let’s go grab you one.”
I was excited.
It had been a few weeks since Lawson and I had been out, and I was looking forward to having a good time with him. The bonfire was casting a glow over the grounds, making it easier to see as we got closer to the group. Everyone was talking and drinking, and it was clear by all the laughter that they were having a great time. Ghost yelled out to Lawson and motioned us over to the fire where he was standing with Memphis and Preacher.
I was relieved to see so many familiar faces as we walked over to him. They each greeted us with nods and friendly banter, making me feel instantly at ease. Lawson grabbed us both a beer from the cooler and offered it to me. I’d just taken my first sip when Ghost leaned over and whispered something in his ear. Lawson nodded, then turned to me and said, “We gotta head inside for a bit.”
“Why? Is something going on?”
“Yeah, you could say that.”
He gave me a wink, then took my hand and together we followed the others inside. I hung back while Lawson and the others gathered around Preacher and Skid. Preacher was talking to Skid, but I couldn’t make out what he was saying. I had no idea what was going on, but I could tell from Lawson’s expression that something big was about to happen.
Preacher grabbed a box from the counter and offered it to Skid as he told him, “Welcome to the brotherhood.”
Skid hugged him, then reached into the box and pulled out a leather jacket with Satan’s Fury MC Little Rock embroidered on the back. I wanted to congratulate him, so I walked over and stood next to Lawson. Skid was beaming with pride as he slipped on his new cut. Emotion filled his eyes as he ran his fingers across the embroidery.
Lawson’s voice was strained as he told him, “Looks good on ya.”
“I can’t believe it.” Skid was all smiles as he said, “I really did it.”
“Never doubted you for a second.” Lawson gave him a big hug and a pat on the shoulder. “You did good, son. You did real good.”
“Thanks, Dad.”
I don’t know who looked more excited- father or son. Not that it mattered. It was a special moment that was made even more special because they were able to share it with each other. They talked for a few minutes, and then Lawson went over and grabbed a couple of cold beers from the cooler and headed back over to me. As he offered me one, I told him, “I didn’t know Skid was patching in tonight.”
