“Whoa, no. I didn’t mean it as an insult. God, me and my stupid mouth. You know I always think you’re sexy…and I prefer you when you’re exhausted, though usually after we mess around.”

I snickered. “Okay, you’re slowly winning me back. I’m listening.”

He scanned the room. “I guess I can’t really win you back until I make up for saying something so stupid, so I just need to know how much longer you’re planning on staying here.”

“Eh, I probably have another thirty minutes on the clock.”

“In that case, guess it’ll be another thirty minutes for me too. And then maybe schedule an hour or so with you?”

An hour or so… Maybe that would be long enough for Miles to fuck Sawyer Burke right out of my brain.

“My hotel’s down the street,” he added.

“Oh, convenient. Well, maybe if you’re lucky, I’ll circle back around again.” I winked at him.

“See you in thirty,” he said, sounding conceited as ever.

Yes, that was all I needed, I thought as I headed back into the crowd. A good fuck to help me through my pathetic state.

After all, it’d been weeks since I’d seen Sawyer. I wondered if he’d already found someone, and it was unreasonable how my muscles stiffened at the thought of him with some sexier guy. But if he was, who was I to fucking judge him for it? We weren’t together. We were both free to mess around with whomever we wanted.

I did my best to shake the thought from my brain as I circled back to Miles Gunner, who was still waiting patiently at the bar, as though he had all the time in the world for me. Although, he was the kind of guy who could have found another trick effortlessly wherever he happened to be standing.

We slipped out together, walking to his hotel, catching up on the way up to his room. Before I knew it, the door to his unit slammed shut behind him, and it was just the two of us.

“Ooh, a king-size bed for your fancy penthouse,” I noted.

“I’d only treat you right in the best of rooms.” He grinned before lurching forward and taking a kiss. His arms hooked around me as he drew me back onto the bed. He crawled over me and kissed me again, his tongue slipping between my lips. It was good, sure. He knew how to kiss a guy, and he certainly knew how to get a guy into his bed, but…it wasn’t right.

Because his kiss warred with what I knew it should feel like—that intense jolt of electricity, that surge that only Sawyer Burke could evoke within me.

Miles’s forehead creased as he leaned back, seeming startled that I wasn’t all over him the way I had been that first time. “Something wrong, Carter?”

I knew where this path led. We’d mess around, enjoy a fleeting moment of excitement. But even that didn’t interest me right then. I’d just wake up, empty as ever.

It had never felt that way with Sawyer. It had been so much more than the hot sex…so much more than the companionship.

“Oh my God,” I said.

“What?” Miles’s eyes widened as he seemed increasingly concerned by my commentary.

“I think that guy ruined sex for me.”

“Huh?”

I laughed. “No, sex with him was amazing, but just, I don’t think I can do it like I used to anymore.”

Miles rolled off me and sat on the mattress at my side. “Okay, I think it’s safe to say I’m totally lost.”

I scooted forward on the bed. “I think I was too, but then after we kissed, I realized it’s not right.”

“Hey, to be fair—”

“No, not you, Miles. It’s just…not the same. I met this guy, and he basically rocked my world. And the sex was so hot and amazing, but then there was so much more there too. He really got me, and… Shit, I think I finally know what the word intimacy means. I really knew what it meant to have something so incredible with someone…and I let it go.”

“Sounds like you’ve got it bad.”

And in a moment, it was so fucking obvious. I had made a huge mistake.

Images of my time with Sawyer replayed through my brain, more intense than the way they’d been haunting me the past few weeks. They forced me to confront something I’d already known.

“Miles, I think I’m in love.”

“This is a little soon for me.”

“No, I—”

He rolled his eyes. “Carter, shut up. Obviously I knew that wasn’t about me.”

“I’m sorry for leaving you blue-balling.”

“It’s what Grindr’s for,” he said with a smile and a shrug. “Now get out of here so I can make room for the next guy. And next time I see you, you’d better be with this amazing man of yours.”

I was grinning like an idiot, and I wasn’t even sure why. Maybe because I’d finally realized what an idiot I’d been all along.
