Colin looks better today; he has his color back. He was quieter than usual, though, which suited me fine. He, Jordan, and Owen spent a good part of the day playing a card game.

Even though we arrive at a late hour, there’s still a line at the hotel’s check in. When I finally reach the desk, I give the clerk our confirmation number.

“Ah, yes. Our grand suite.”

I frown at the man. Though the rooms that the Stantons booked for us have been nice, they’ve not been suites. The men have been paired up in doubles; maybe they’re going to room all together at this hotel.

“And two other rooms?” I ask.

The man scans up and down his screen, clicks buttons and scans again. “No, just the suite. It’s our best accommodation.” He smiles at me, as if I should be pleased at this news.

“There should be three rooms on our reservation, two at the very least.” Toad and I have been in separate singles the previous two nights, though we could share a room.

“I’ve double-checked the reservation, ma’am. It’s just for our grand suite.”

“I’d like to add two singles, then,” I tell him, opening my wallet to retrieve the company card.

The man’s face falls. “Oh, I’m sorry, ma’am. We’re completely booked up this evening.”

“You don’t have any additional rooms available?” He’s already made that clear, but I’m reluctant to believe it.

“No, I’m sorry, ma’am, but we do have the suite for you.”

I let out a sigh. “Okay, please hold onto that. I’ll be right back.”

I find a seat on a padded bench along the wall and do some frantic searching on my phone. Something big must be going on around here today or tomorrow, because I can’t find any vacancies in a twenty-five mile radius.

Legs appear in front of me, and I look up to find Jordan and Toad. “Are we checked in?” Jordan sounds impatient.

I explain the situation, mostly looking at Toad while I talk.

“That’s no problem for me,” she says. “I’ll sleep in the van. I feel uneasy leaving it alone every night, anyway.” Before I can ask her if she’s sure she’ll be comfortable, she walks off.

I can’t contain another sigh that rises. I was really looking forward to being flat on a bed after sitting all day. The van’s seats recline, but probably not far enough for a decent full night’s sleep. “I guess I’ll sleep in the van, too,” I say, preparing to head back to the counter to get the key for the men’s suite.

Jordan grabs my arm. “Don’t be stupid.”

“What?” I shake him off.

“How big is the suite?”

“I don’t know. It’s the grand suite. The guy said it’s their best one.” I say this with irritation, picturing the men living it up in fluffy robes tonight while I toss and turn. I’m pretty sure I’m going to be achy tomorrow.

“We can all stay in it. I’m sure there’s plenty of room.”

I stare up at him. If it were Colin making this offer, I’d be skeptical of his motives. Jordan just seems like he’s trying to be a decent person. For once.

“I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” I say. Sometimes, when I’m in the van with them, the air is so thick with testosterone that I can practically smell it. What would it be like to share a room with them all night?

But maybe there are multiple rooms within one suite. Maybe it’s massive, but we’d still all be sleeping in there together. It really doesn’t seem like a good idea.

“I’m not going to let you sleep in the van,” Jordan says. “I’m sure the suite has plenty of room, and if needed, some of us guys can sleep on the floor.”

I look at him like he’s sprouted another head. “You’d do that?”

“Contrary to your beliefs, I’m not a monster.” When I make a face at him, he says, “But, no, I wouldn’t sleep on the floor. I’d make Owen or Colin do it.”

He cracks a grin to let me know he’s joking, and I can’t help but laugh. Wow, Jordan just made me laugh — and with him, not at him.

Maybe I’ve earned some respect from the men after the two shows we’ve had. We got off to a rocky start, but maybe we can have a decent, friendly relationship going forward.

Besides, how bad could one night sharing a room with them be? It’ll surely be better than sleeping in a vehicle.

The suite only has two beds, because of course it does.

They’re big beds, and they’re sort of in separate rooms, though the rooms don’t have proper doors on them, so there’s not much point to the walls that partition them. The suite is more about the living room space it features in the center, which doesn’t help us at all. There’s a stiff, narrow sofa, which feels far less comfortable than the seats in the van. I asked the hotel about rollaway beds, but none were available.
