“Something small. A sandwich,” she mumbles.
“Is it just a headache?”
She wouldn’t fake it because I made her uncomfortable. Right?
Danny nods. “I’ll just nap for an hour, then we can get back to work.”
“Okay.” My eyes drift over her before I turn and leave the suite.
I go to the concierge and ask, “Where’s the nearest drug store?”
The woman blinks all shocked at me, then asks, “Oh, you mean a pharmacy?”
“Yes.”
She gives me directions, and at least it’s not too far away. Getting painkillers is an experience, but I manage to get something for Danny’s headache. The sandwiches I get from a local store.
By the time I get back to the hotel, it’s already past six. I walk to Danny’s room, and seeing she’s awake, I say, “Food and then painkillers.”
“Thanks.” She gets up, looking a little out of it.
I wait for her to sit down in the living room, then hand her a sandwich before I grab a water from the fridge for each of us.
We eat our sandwiches in silence, and I make sure Danny takes two painkillers before we get back to work.
Four hours later, my phone begins to ring, and seeing it’s Christopher, I answer, “Missing us already?”
“Yeah. Where’s the Sutherland contract?” he asks.
“Did you ask Dorris?” I handed everything to my assistant before I left.
“She’s out on lunch.”
“I left everything with her,” I say.
“I’ll wait for her to get back. How was the flight?” he asks.
“As good as a twenty-nine-hour flight can be,” I chuckle.
“What’s the time there?”
I check my watch. “Just shy of ten pm.”
“Shit, go get some rest,” Christopher mutters, then he adds, “Make sure my sister sleeps.”
“Will do.”
Ending the call, I glance at Danny. She’s pressing two fingers against her temple, and it has me saying. “Let’s call it a night. We can get an early start tomorrow morning.”
When she nods, my eyebrow raises, and I can’t resist teasing her. “What? No, go to hell, Ryker. I’m going to work myself to a standstill?”
She lets out a huff, then mutters, “I’m too tired to care right now.”
Danny walks to her bedroom, and before she closes the door, she says, “Night.”
“Night.” I stare at the closed door for a moment, then turn my attention back to the files.
Chapter 3
DANNY
When I wake up, my thoughts instantly return to the night before.
A frown forms on my forehead as I turn onto my side, staring out the expansive bay windows at the rising sun.
What happened last night? Was it just my overactive imagination? I replay the almost kiss, trying to figure out if it was real or just wishful thinking.
Ryker placing his arm on the back of the couch. His body pressing against mine. That look.
God, that look.
I felt it in my ovaries, and it froze me in place.
He leaned in. I’m sure of it.
Shit! Does he know I have a crush on him, and he’s just teasing me?
Would Ryker do something like that?
No, not the Ryker I know. He’d never play with someone’s emotions.
But he leaned in as if he was going to kiss me.
My frown deepens, and it feels like I’m trying to put together a puzzle with only half the pieces.
Letting out a frustrated sigh, I get up and walk to my bathroom so I can get ready for the day.
Then again… there’s no way Ryker has romantic feelings toward me. I mean, shit, I’m almost seven years older than him. He probably sees me as an older sister.
I pull a disgruntled face as I brush my teeth.
Maybe there was a smudge or an eyelash or something on my face? Hell if I know.
I let out another sigh and rinse my mouth.
I finish my morning routine and put on a pair of jeans and a cream blouse. Leaving my room, my eyes instantly go to Ryker’s closed door. I prepare myself a cup of coffee, then leaning back against the counter, I slowly sip the warm liquid.
Shit, was it really just my imagination?
Ryker’s door opens, and then my eyebrows pop up as I bring the mug to my parting lips.
He’s only wearing grey sweatpants, and they’re hanging low on his hips. Greedily my eyes rake over his chest and abs. And those damn curves by his hips that reduce my IQ to zero.
My abdomen tightens as I watch his muscles ripple beneath his tanned skin. Then my gaze gets stuck on the bulge. If that’s the outline, then I’d love to see the real thing.
Ryker stops next to me to make himself a cup of coffee, then he murmurs, “Morning.” His voice sounds low and rough, and it makes desire burn through my body.
Somehow, I manage to mumble, “Morning.”
Some brain activity returns, enough for me to remember my own coffee. I take a sip, and unable to stop myself, my head slowly turns, and then my eyes are feasting on his body again.
