“I’ve heard enough,” the wannabe Samurai says as he steps forward with his blade glinting in the warm glow of the setting sun. “Time to take down dis feral grizzly and get our leader a much-deserved promotion.”
Shit, they’re going to kill him. My man stands his ground as all four of them advance. There’s no way he can fight off all four of those giant guys, even if he is fighting for me.
The Frenchman reaches him first. He swings the sword at my mate and Cain ducks out of the way just in time. The blade slices through a wisp of dark hair, sending it floating to the ground. Cain leaps back up and cracks him in the jaw with a thunderous uppercut that I can feel in my chest.
He stumbles back and the sword slips out of his hand. It falls on the ground with a clatter as the three others leap on Cain.
I burst out of the car as he struggles to fight them off.
“Help!” I scream at the top of my lungs as I run away from the car, shuffling along in my black stilettos. “Help!! He’s kidnapping me!!”
They’re distracted with my mate and don’t see me running toward the sword. I grab it off the ground and race to the back of their car. I shove the tip into the back tire as Cain punches the big guy in the face. The other one with the tattoo sleeves wraps his arm around Cain’s neck from behind, choking him as he wrestles with Jackson.
Cain slams his elbow into the tattooed guy’s stomach. His arm releases from his neck as he grunts in pain. In one smooth motion, Cain punches Jackson in the jaw and then pushes the big guy off balance.
He’s actually holding his own. A part of me wants to stop and watch him fight for me, but I need to help. I have to help even the odds a little in any way I can.
I shove the tip of the blade into the other back tire and it deflates with a hiss.
When I stand back up, our eyes meet. Even while fighting with four huge shifters, Cain still stares at me in awe. It’s like he can’t take his eyes off me. A fist connects with his jaw and his eyes are ripped away from mine. He grunts as he drops to his knee.
“Help!!” I scream, running right into the fight to throw them off. “Help! Help!!”
They all get distracted for a second and it allows Cain to get back up to his feet.
“Get in the car!” Jackson shouts at me.
“Which car?!” I screech as I frantically run between them.
“Fucking hell,” he mutters as he rubs his sore jaw. “That one!”
He points at their car, but I head toward Cain’s.
The four shifters regroup with their murderous eyes locked on my mate. They’re not going to stop until they kill him.
“Cain!” I shout as I get to the car. “Catch!”
I toss him the sword and he snatches it out of the air. He swings it in a deadly figure eight as I jump into the driver’s seat.
“What the hell?” Jackson says when he realizes that I’m not on their side. “We’re trying to save you, lady!”
“And I’m trying to save my mate.”
Cain meets my eyes for a moment and a thrill of adrenaline surges through me. I’ve never done anything like this. It’s exciting and romantic and just what I always wanted—an intense love affair to shake up my boring little life.
He keeps the shifters at bay with the sword as he quickly backs up to the car. He opens the passenger door and I floor it before he’s halfway in.
“Whoa!” he gasps as he pulls himself in and slams the door shut.
We race down the unpaved road, kicking up huge clouds of dust behind us. I keep one eye on the road and one on the rearview mirror as we speed away.
No…
I get a hazy glimpse of a wolf running through the cloud of dust.
“That’s the Frenchman,” Cain says when he turns and sees him following us. “Remy.”
He looks at the sword between his legs and then inexplicably throws it out the window. It cartwheels on the dirt before coming to a stop in the middle of the road.
The wolf slows to a stop beside the sword. He circles around it as he watches us drive off.
“Why did you do that?” I ask as I stare at him in shock.
He shrugs. “It was a family sword. From his pack. I know it means a lot to him.”
“So? He was trying to kill you with it!”
He shakes his head and sighs. “He wasn’t doing anything wrong. He’s doing what he’s supposed to do.”
I stare at him in disbelief. “Murdering you?”
Another heavy sigh. “Putting my bear down. He’s beyond saving.”
