“Fuck,” he swore. He tossed the grease rag onto a worktable. “John said she’s struggling to hold down much of anything. Doc won’t put her on medication yet. I don’t fucking get why.”

“She needs a new damn doctor.”

Jonah snorted. “Tried that, too, but John’s insurance won’t allow another obstetrician in the area. He barely managed to get her on his insurance. It’s too late for him to change plans.”

Christ.

“Then we pay cash,” I told him.

Jonah snorted and waved his arms around. “You fucking see the shitshow I’m in right now, Blaze? I’m barely making a profit right now. Dad ran this place into the fucking ground with his gambling addiction. I don’t have the fucking cash to spare.”

I shrugged, shoving my hands into his pockets. “Then I’ll cover it.” Jonah stared at me for a moment like he was trying to figure out my motive. I sighed. “Jonah, I’m fucking worried about her. She needs a different doctor. I’ll make sure she gets one.”

Jonah frowned at me for a moment before nodding. “I’m half tempted to send you out on your ass.” I smirked. “But goddammit, she needs help.”

Of many different kinds, apparently, but I didn’t say that out loud.

“We got a deal?” I asked him.

Jonah nodded. “Don’t you fucking hurt her, Blaze,” he warned me.

I shot him a deadpan look. “Got no interest in hurting her anymore, Jonah. So, you don’t have to worry about that. Now I’m just concerned with keeping her alive.”

He arched a blond brow at me. “Thought you wanted her dead a few weeks ago.”

I smirked. “Jonah, if I wanted her to die that day, she would have been dead.”

With that, I strode from his garage, already pulling my phone out. When I got in my truck and my phone was connected to the Bluetooth system, I called Emma, my personal assistant. “Mr. Jackson?” she asked.

“I need you to do me a favor,” I told her.

“Of course, sir.”

“Get me the name and phone number of the best obstetrician in the area. I don’t care about the cost. I just care about the quality of care.”

If she was shocked, she didn’t even reveal it. “Yes sir. I’ll have it ready for you and on your desk tomorrow morning.”

“Thank you.”

I hung up, and just to be nice, I sent a bonus to her bank account. I always did it when she did things for me that weren’t work-related.

If you wanted to keep good employees, you had to treat them well.

Warm, calloused hands were gently caressing my cheek, disturbing my slumber. A low moan of displeasure crawled up my throat as I swatted at the hand. A low rumble of a chuckle met my ears.

That wasn’t John.

I slowly opened my eyes, and they landed right on Jonah’s face. He was crouched in front of me, a tender smile on his face. I yawned and closed my eyes again. “What?” I mumbled.

“Nice to see you, too, baby girl,” he teased. “Blaze stopped by the shop. Told me what happened.” I groaned. Would it have killed Blaze to keep his mouth shut? If I’d wanted Jonah to know, I’d have told him myself. “How are you feeling?”

“Tired,” I told him honestly. I slowly opened my eyes again. God, why did he have to be so gorgeous and look so damn worried about me? I couldn’t take people caring about me. I ran my eyes over him, noting how clean he looked. “You showered?”

He nodded. “Used the shower at work before coming over. Wasn’t sure if the smell of sweat and ass would make you sick.”

I softly laughed. “Where’s John?”

“In the living room with Blaze. We brought dinner. You like pho?”

I nodded and held my arms up to him. “I love pho. I don’t feel like walking, though.”

Jonah released a husky laugh and slid his arms beneath me before lifting me against his chest, cradling me like I was the most precious thing in the world. I pressed a kiss to the side of his neck before I rested my head on his shoulder. “Why is Blaze here?”

“He wanted to check on you as well,” he told me. “Can’t really blame him since he was the one who kept you from cracking your skull open on the concrete.”

I frowned but didn’t say anything. When we emerged into the living room, Blaze and John immediately looked over at us. Jonah simply set me on the couch next to Blaze and dropped a kiss to my forehead before dropping down onto the loveseat.

“Here. Eat,” Blaze said, holding a bowl out to me.

My stomach rumbled, and though I loved pho, I was terrified I was just going to throw it back up again. But I didn’t voice it. Seemed like everyone was worried about me enough, and it was honestly making my skin crawl.

I didn’t know how to deal with people who actually gave a fuck about my well-being. Too many people had pretended to care and then walked away.
