“There was no necklace present,” Adrian admits, running his hands through his damp hair. “I don’t want to go tonight.”
“You’re our date.” Killian grins. “You have no choice. Just run in the opposite direction if she makes eye contact.”
“Easy for you to say. You weren’t asked, such… unbiblical questions!”
Killian rolls his eyes. “You’re a grown ass man, just say no.”
He whispers, “She’s very strong.”
“Hey!” Dustin yells. “That’s what I said!”
“This is not a time to celebrate her strength,” Adrian whispers. “Let’s just get through the wine tasting, and not die. Amen.”
Killian makes a cross with his hand while Dustin nods solemnly. You’d think we were going to a funeral. Then again, it is Addison, so who knows what fresh hell could be unleashed.
I take a deep breath. “What’s the worst that could happen?”
“Pearls,” all the guys say in unison, and I have to say…
They have a point.
CHAPTER NINETEEN
Killian
Should I be kissing her while getting random texts from my agent asking how the hell I’m already all over the internet singing Taylor Swift to a woman who’s not the bride?
Angry Agent
Tell me I read that breaking article wrong. Tell me you aren’t serenading the girl from last time and tell me it’s not true you’re engaged.
I sigh and stare down at my phone, then back up at Scarlett. She’s in a gorgeous black dress, mourning according to her, the loss of my mouth, which just made me want to kiss her harder. She takes a long sip of wine.
Shit I’m in trouble. I won’t want to walk away again.
How has it only been one day? A very long day, but still. Scarlett’s pink lips meet her glass again. Adrian stares me down and shakes his head slowly, it’s like he raided my closet with his ripped tight jeans, brown boots and tight gray YoungLA shirt that basically every bro at the gym bro-ing wears like a religion. Somehow, they figured out how to get the perfect cut on the biceps, which means you look jacked even if you aren’t.
I glare. Too bad Adrian actually is jacked. He keeps looking over his shoulder, and I may keep widening my eyes pretending to silently warn him “Gertrude’s behind you.” He’s not amused.
I quickly type back to my agent.
Me
Don’t worry about her, it’s just a little… acting this week. Once I get back, I’ll make sure to squish the rumors and I’ll be more careful. It’s nothing.
Angry Agent
It better be nothing, you know what happened last time, getting entangled with crazy fans isn’t the best look and to be with her again at her sister’s wedding, I thought she wasn’t even going? This was supposed to help you look like the hero not like the guy that’s still obsessed with the bride he stole a year ago.
I groan into my hands.
Me
I’ll take care of it.
Angry Agent
This is on you if it blows up and then it’s on me. Tell Dustin to do his damn job!
I toss my phone onto the table.
“Trouble?” Adrian asks reaching for another one of the appetizers in the middle of the table for the wine pairings.
I shrug. “Nah, my agent just has something up her ass.”
“Always has something up her ass,” Dustin grumbles. “I’m going to go get more of that dish with the sauce.”
“Descriptive.” I nod.
“The pasta thing?” Adrian jumps to his feet. “Get me some too?”
“Sure.” Dustin stands and starts to move away when Adrian jumps to his feet, eyes wide. “Actually, I’ll go with you, good sir! Ha-ha!”
I frown. “You need to work on your fake laugh.”
“It’s because I’m pure.” He rolls his eyes then shoves Dustin in front of him just as Gertrude makes a beeline for our table.
I smirk over at them.
“What?” Scarlett moves seats and pulls the chair out next to me. “Adrian’s purity?”
“Yeah, I mean he said that with a straight face while using Dustin as a human shield.”
She clinks her glass with mine. “I think Dustin is too focused on the buffet table to notice that Adrian’s using him improperly.”
“Hmm.” I glance back at Scarlett. “I like your lips.”
She chokes on her glass of wine. “Thank you?”
I tilt her chin toward me with my thumb and forefinger. “Are we going to be alone tonight, or do you think we’ll have to babysit?”
“You’re rich, right?” She leans in and presses her hands onto my thighs. I don’t even pretend to hide the fact that I’m already aroused. “Maybe you just pay them off. Adrian’s going to be watching you like a hawk, and Dustin won’t stop shouting about papers.”
Which reminds me.
I cringe down at my phone then slowly shove it into my tight jean pocket. “Yeah well, sometimes things happen, and the team always wants me covered.”
Scarlett nods and stares down at her lap. “So, what’s next for you after the reception?”
I lean in. “I could take a few days off.”
