"Yes, and as your friend, I'd like to live to see another day.”

“Dramatic much? What exactly do you think is gonna happen if you tell me?”

“I don't think you get it, Sian. You still don’t get who your fiancé is, do you? Trust me it’s best if we leave this alone.” She looked at Valerie when she said this.

“Jace? What’s he gonna do?” See what I mean? Down the rabbit hole. Valerie looked at the others and back to me with an odd expression on her face. Then she face palmed and shook her head.

“Oh-my-gosh are you serious? Okay, so here’s what you’re gonna do from today onward. Watch, listen and learn. When Jace is talking, don’t just listen to the words coming out of his mouth. Watch his facial expressions, listen to the tone of his voice.”

“And why am I doing this again?”

“Because you’re about to marry someone that will never, read my lips, NEVER tell you shit, especially when it comes to things like this. All he’s ever gonna tell you, are the good things.”

“And you know this how? I thought you said you didn’t hang around Jace that much?”

“Because that’s what I have to do with Track.” She lowered her voice and held one hand against the side of her mouth like she actually expected the boys to be listening in.

“You guys are starting to freak me out, what is going on?” I held up my hand to give myself time to think. “Okay, getting back to what you said in the beginning. I know the cops are watching Jace because that idiot told them he’s the one who attacked her in the hospital, but I was his alibi and his dad got them kicked off the case or something, so what?”

My thinking is that he didn’t do anything all this time even though he suspects her of the attack in the alley, so why now?

That little dust-up in the restaurant was nothing to cause all this mayhem, so what was he, and now these two, hiding from me? Something wasn’t adding up but I wasn’t surprised. Since I met Jace I’ve been out of the loop a lot.

“The explosion.”

“Tammy!” Belle tried cutting her off. Too late.

“What explosion?” She buttoned her lips and the three of them shared a look.

“The explosion at my house? What could she possibly have to do with that? It was faulty wiring.” Now they were all looking at the floor and I felt the blood drain from my head and my eyes grew dim.

“What the hell is wrong with you? What the hell happened?” He would choose this moment to walk through the door. He looked around at all of us waiting for an answer but no one was talking. The others because they were probably afraid of that look on his face, and me, because I’m going to scalp his ass.

“Who messed with you?”

“Nobody messed with me crazy person. Why did you kick Mandy out of school?”

“Didn’t we have this conversation? Did I or did I not tell you to leave that shit alone? Don’t you have a wedding to plan?”

“No, because you told my mother and yours not to bother me with it that it’s too much.”

“Sian…voice…down…now.”

"I'm not marrying you."

“Everybody out.” He waited for the room to clear.

“Say that again!” Oh, the frost! Dammit! Okay, we’re at school, the bell’s about to ring so classes can start back in five minutes. Shit! That’s more than enough time for him to wring my neck like he’s always threatening to.

He didn’t advance on me which was even scarier. At least when he does that I know he’s more bark than bite and I’m safe. But the look he gave me now was one I’d never seen before.

I swallowed hard, already regretting my words. It’s one thing for me to throw them at his head when we’re alone and I’m past frustration, but this was wrong.

I did it in front of our friends and now he’s probably embarrassed. I’m not familiar with an embarrassed Jace but I know it’s not going to be good. What a time to come to your damn senses.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean….” He turned and walked out the door. That didn’t hurt as much as the look on his face when he did it. I ran after him already close to tears. I was still feeling lightheaded from before and now his actions were cutting off my air.

Why is he so hardheaded and why do we keep clashing like this, always over the same thing?

I grabbed the back of his shirt when he kept going.

“Jace stop, where are you going?”

“I don’t wanna look at you right now, you’re pissing me off. Get off.” He pulled my hands off of his shirt and I felt my heart drop.

By the time the others came back, I was still standing in the doorway where he’d left me. “Sian, what happened? Come sit down before you fall. You look like you’re about to pass out.” Belle led me back to my seat and Valerie went to get me a bottle of water.
