Sara clenches her jaw and looks around our small group as the crowded students watch on with wide eyes, and seeing Sara beginning to fumble, the whispers start.

Sara huffs, her nostrils flaring wide and just when I think she’s about to stomp her foot and start to cry, she turns and storms away, her hips swaying and her loud, frustration cry following behind her.

Yeah, this really is going to be fun.

CHAPTER 10

My phone chimes with an incoming text, and without thinking, I reach across and scoop it off the armrest of the couch, more than happy to take a break from all the bullshit schoolwork that I need to catch up on.

My eyes drop to the phone, and it’s not until I see Ember’s name on the screen that I glance up across Carver’s living room to find her staring back at me with a ridiculous smirk stretched over her pretty face, her schoolwork long forgotten.

My brows furrow and I drop my gaze back to my phone, swiping my thumb across the screen to bring up her text. Within seconds, a loud, howling laugh tears out of me as I scan over her words.

Ember - You eat big, sludgy, diarrhea turds for breakfast.

My gaze snaps back to her smug face, seeing the challenge flashing in her eyes. Grayson and King look between us, forgetting about Sam’s ledger sitting on Grayson’s lap. I'm sure they’re wondering what the fuck is going on, but when we don't offer to share, they get back to scrolling through their phones.

I instantly get to work.

Winter - You eat bitches like Sara for breakfast and you fucking love it, you dirty whore.

Ember - Jesus. It’s a joke, not a dick. Don’t take it so hard.

Winter - Can’t help it. Hard is the only way I like my dicks.

Ember snickers across the room, and I can’t help but look up at her with a stupid grin stretched wide across my face. Grayson and King still watch us, but it’s clear that they’ve moved way past asking us what the fuck is going on.

Carver strides into the room with a packet of chips, and as he drops down beside me on the couch and snatches the ledger off Grayson’s lap. I take the chips and tear them open as another text comes through.

Ember - Speaking of … you’re not really going to go to war with Sara, right? Don’t you already have too much on your plate? I mean, do you recall the whole getting shot thing and all the attacks? They’re hardly a distant memory.

Winter - You don’t think that I could take her?

Ember - I think taking her is exactly what she wants out of you.

Ember - FYI - I heard a rumor that her clit runs a little to the left so when you’re on your knees eating her pussy, make sure you’re hitting it right!

I roll my eyes and glance up at Ember. “Really?” I grunt, giving her a blank stare as she snickers to herself and buries her head back in her phone.

Ember - Okay. Seriously? I think you’d whoop her bitch ass and make her regret ever looking your way. Don’t hate on me, but I just don’t think a war is something you need right now.

I scan over her text while feeling Carver’s stare on the side of my face. “What’s going on?” he questions, trying to peer at the screen of my phone and read what little of our conversation that he can see. I tilt my phone away and focus my glare on him. “You good there? You don’t see me trying to read your texts.”

Carver narrows his eyes without even a hint of guilt at being caught out. He simply shrugs his shoulders. “I get my answers anyway I can,” he says unapologetically.

I let out a sigh and nod toward Ember. “If you really must know, Ember just got her period. She’s on a heavy flow and now she can’t move because she’s worried that she’s just painted your good couch red with her pussy.”

Carver’s eyes bug out of his head and he whips his gaze to Ember who sits across the room looking horrified and embarrassed. “Fuck you,” she screeches at me, grabbing a cushion and launching it at my face as she stands up and turns around, showing everyone that I’m full of shit.

As she drops back down into her spot, she looks back at Carver who appears more than relieved about the state of his couch. “I was actually in the middle of trying to explain why I think starting some bullshit war with Sara is a fucking stupid idea, but now she’s probably going to go ahead with it, just to spite you for trying to read her messages.”

Carver scoffs. “I wouldn’t put it past her,” he says as he swivels his gaze to me. “But she’s fucking right. Any other time, I’d be more than happy to sit back and watch you start some bullshit war with the people who have wronged you, but not now. There’s too much going on.”
