“That’s no excuse for the way they treat you.”

“What makes you think they treat me badly?”

“Margarita told me.”

“Ah… She’s the person who told Haven you claimed me.”

“She’s Haven’s cousin.”

“You could have given me a heads-up that I work with one of your exes.”

“Haven was never my girlfriend. I took what she was putting out on a few occasions. When Haven started texting and calling me, I never answered and started avoiding her when she would come to the club on Fridays. One time, she caught me shit-faced, and I let her give me a blowjob. Jesus caught Margarita recording it on Haven’s phone. I busted her phone. Hell, I really didn’t give a fuck she recorded it; what pissed me off was she didn’t ask. We had a church meeting, and she was barred from the club. Margarita had to work a couple of months at the warehouse and hasn’t been allowed to invite anyone to the parties for two years. For running her mouth about me claiming you, she lost her room. She’s on thin ice with the club. One more strike, and she’s out.”

“I like Margarita. Don’t punish her for me. If Haven had asked if I had been claimed, I would have told her. I didn’t think it was a state secret. Was I wrong?”

“No, but it was your information to give, not Margarita’s. She had to know Haven would be angry and would go after you. Intent counts as much as the deed.”

It would be useless to argue with him. Doom’s mind had been made up.

She had learned several surprising facts about The Last Riders since being around them. They had each other’s back, which was what she wanted for Luc. What had taken her longer to figure out was their intrinsic principles of the men they held themselves to. Honor was first and foremost the most important. Loyalty came next. Margarita had stepped out of bounds when she discussed Doom and her with Haven.

“The head of HR was in the breakroom today. Haven was called to come to the HR office before we left for the day. She was given a written notice of a meeting scheduled between HR and the doctors in the practice.”

Doom was unrepentant. “Good. She deserves to lose her job.”

“I was called down too. My meeting is before hers.”

“They won’t fire you.”

“You can’t be sure.”

“You haven’t done anything to be fired over.”

“They could say I gave you the code to access the breakroom.”

“I used Haven’s code.”

“If I get fired, I won’t be happy. Haven is a nurse. She won’t be easy to replace. They’re short two nursing positions as it is now. I will be much easier to replace,” she said worriedly. She really liked her job.

Doom reached out to catch her hand in his. “Honey, you aren’t going to lose your job.”

“You can’t know that. Haven works closely with the doctors. I say hi and bye to them as they leave.”

“That’s what I’m counting on. If they work closely with Haven, they know she’s a conniving bitch.”

She scowled at Doom, but he missed the intended mark, too intent on the plastic bag she was holding.

“What’s for dinner?”

“Nothing for you.”

“Come on; give me a break… I’m starved.”

“Fine.” She handed him the bag, then went up the steps.

Opening the door, she turned to close it, only for Doom to maneuver himself through before she could.

“You do have a microwave at your place.” Exasperated, she removed her coat.

“I hate eating alone.” Striding through her apartment, he set the bag on the counter and started unpacking the soup container.

“You’ll still be eating alone. I already ate. I wasn’t in the mood for Italian, so I grabbed a burger on the ride home.”

Doom’s head jerked back when he opened the carton.

Arden giggled at his reaction. “The soup is a special creation. Mama says it boosts immunity.”

Doom braved another whiff. “What she protecting them from? Count Dracula?”

“Probably. She only makes it when she’s in a bad mood.”

Putting the soup in the microwave, he leaned nonchalantly against the counter. “Why was she in a bad mood?”

“I didn’t ask.” Sitting down on the couch, she slipped her shoes off.

“You’re lying.”

“It’s none of your business.” She shrugged. She went to the kitchen, took a bowl from the cabinet, and gave a him a spoon. “Here you go. I need to take a shower. Some of that garlic splattered on me. I’ve been smelling it all night.”

“Might as well wait then.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m hungry. I’m going to eat this vampire soup, and then we can shower after we have sex.”

Her hands went to her hips. “Who says we’re going to have sex? I’m still angry at you.”

“If you were that angry, you would have poured the soup over me, not given it to me to eat.”

“I don’t believe in wasting food.” She gave him a sniff of disdain.
