“You’ve got about ten minutes,” Dylan said.

The door closed, leaving him alone with his brother.

“I need you to shut the fuck up and I need you to trust me,” Bull said.

It was on the tip of his tongue to complain and make his brother’s life difficult, but instead he opted for silence. There was no point in pissing Bull off any more than necessary.

“There’s been Cartel movement. They’ve requested our presence less and less and William Ranford has the feds on his ass. Drugs were smuggled into one of his bars and just at the right moment, the cops showed up. He’s been busted, but so far, he’s got a good lawyer, but we both believe this is blowback from taking out Julio and the current leader of the Vito Crew Cartel. I had a package delivered to me a month ago. It had every single image of you in the past six weeks. You’re a target, Grant. You are under the protection of the club, but I need them to look away from you.”

“You can’t do that.”

“Shut your fucking mouth and let me speak. The Cartel in the past week have gone quiet. The dogs down south have been taken, as well as the two we’ve recovered. We believe someone is in operation and testing our borders. Testing our ability to protect. Ranford has had no choice but to go into hiding. There was an attempt on his life. I don’t know where he is or what he’s doing, but he gave me a clear warning—protect who I hold dear. I know you won’t allow me to put you in the clubhouse. Maddie is currently living in the clubhouse, surrounded by our men. I need people to see you as useless to me, Grant. That’s why Pat is wearing the VP patch. Your life is in danger, but I can lessen the threat by showing them you mean nothing.”

“For fuck’s sake, Bull. This shit didn’t work the last time. They still figured out you were in love with Maddie.”

“You’re not my woman, Grant. You’re my pain in the ass brother.”

“And they know you won’t throw me to the curb,” Grant said. “That’s what this is all about? Protecting me? What the fuck is this? I’m not a child.”

“You are still my brother.”

“And have you ever considered that I might be able to protect myself? Someone was able to get into the shelter, Bull. They knew how we worked, which is why they were able to take the dogs. You know what that means.”

Bull frowned.

“Someone was able to get past Hellen. It’s someone close.”

“No one new is around.”

“Then someone is feeding this information to the enemy, Bull. You as well as I know that it’s hard to infiltrate the club. Someone is.”

Bull ran a finger across his lips. “Or someone who knows how we run things.”

Grant looked toward the door. “Dylan?”

“No, he wouldn’t do that. He loves this town too much.”

“Look, I don’t know who it is but what I do know is this shit isn’t good, Bull. You can’t kick me out now.”

“And what about Aria?” Bull asked. “Do you think our enemy is going to give a shit about going after women? They kill dogs.”

“I’ll handle it, but you can’t take my fucking patch from me.”

“Your patch, for now, is taken. There’s nothing I can do. You’re going to have to live with that. I can’t put your life at risk. I promised our old man that I would take care of you.”

Grant slammed his palm against the gate. “Don’t give me that shit. You and I both know our old man didn’t give a crap about me. You were his firstborn son. You were the one he wanted to take care of. Not me. Never fucking me.”

He gritted his teeth as he felt the anger rising.

“I’m doing what I know to be best.” Bull had already started walking toward the door.

“If you do this, I swear you’re going to regret it because I’m not going to stop being your fucking VP. That patch is mine.”

Chapter Eight

“Do you think this is the right thing to do?” Pat asked.

Bull stood in his office and for the first time in a while, he thought about his old man. That bastard had at one point been like a fucking hero to him. This was a long, long, way fucking long time ago. The man had been dead for years, killed at his own hands, and yet he was still causing him trouble.

Grant spent a lot more time with their old man toward the later years. Bull had been tired of his shit, and even though he knew he was a little unstable, he figured as his flesh and blood, Grant would have in some way been safe.

Was he wrong?

Over the years Grant changed. He knew that. Bull also knew to a certain extent that Grant’s bullying ways weren’t even down to his own views. Their dad had a standard of how he felt men should be. Women were trophies. They were meant to look good on your arm, warm your bed, and keep fucking silent. Their dad would have hated Maddie.
