“I saw Grim. I told him not to come back again.” Biting my lip, I lay my head on the table. “And Max… well, Max has his own issues he needs to deal with. Like a whole new world and a crazy, possessive girlfriend or wannabe girlfriend, I’m not really sure which,” I add, shrugging my shoulders.

“I invited him in for dinner,” John says, pulling my attention to him. “It’s smart to be in good standing with someone new, and I can smell the power radiating from him." He pauses, then asks me, “What is he?”

I feel all eyes on me, waiting for an answer.

How do I tell them?

Should I tell them?

It’s not my place, but they are my family, and I have never kept secrets before, apart from Grim. But that situation was different.

“He is part Angel and part demon,” I announce.

“And I’m part demon,” I say as I look at Tatiana. “You knew this already, didn’t you?” She nods, and her eyes glance to the diary on the counter.

“The copy I had didn’t say who your father was, just that you were part demon. The original diary might tell us more.” She looks back at me. “Have you read it?

“No. Max has ideas, though.”

“Really? Who?” Tatiana asks.

“He thinks it’s the King of Hell.”

The whole room goes silent at my words.

“I…” Tatiana shakes her head. “How do you feel about that?”

I shrug my shoulders.

“I haven’t really had time to absorb it. I do hope what I read in that diary will tell me.” I look over to it. “Why did she keep so many secrets from us?” I whisper.

“I don’t know.”

A knock sounds on the back door, and John goes to answer it.

“Angel and demon, ha. That’s a big one,” Tatiana muses, sitting back and rubbing her belly.

Max walks in. He greets us all, but his eyes hold on me a little longer.

“Dinner is ready. I’m glad you chose to join us.”

“I cannot decline an invitation. That would be rude of me.” He smiles, heads straight to where I am, and sits beside me.

Everyone notices but says nothing as the food is served.

We remain in this place between kisses and touches for the rest of the week. Max and John get along great. When I’m not sleeping, I am reading through my mother’s diary, trying to work it all out.

I can’t quite do it.

When I get sick of reading, I get up and walk outside, and that’s where Max usually finds me.

He asks to speak to me, takes me to the tree, and kisses me.

We haven’t gone any further, and I’m thankful he isn’t rushing me and that he wants to take his time.

His people have all settled in nicely and are getting along with the wolves, though yesterday, we had an attack from a group of four vampires.

Viper knows I am here.

I knew it wouldn’t be long until he did. And to be honest, he isn’t my main priority right now. I’m too busy trying to work out who I am. I still don’t know her yet. And I want to.

This diary is meant to help me. But it’s only leaving me more confused.

Walking out into the night, I see him before he spots me. Tents have been set up all around the wolves’ houses. Max always makes sure everyone is doing okay before he settles, and I smile when I see him sitting in a group of people.

“I hate you.” I don’t even need to look to know who’s standing next to me. “I hate that you came along and took him.” We’re both facing Max, and I can see him watching us. “Why did you have to come and ruin everything?”

“Your world was dying, Levy.”

“No, it wasn’t. He would have saved us.” She turns away from Max to me and gets right in my face. “I will make you pay for taking him. He was meant to be mine. I’ve heard stories of you. The wolves talk. You had a thing with Death. Why don’t you go back to him and leave us be?”

“Levy.” Max says her name abruptly from a short distance away. She smiles at him before she offers him her hand, but he doesn’t take it.

“Walk with me?” she asks sweetly, but he disregards her completely.

“I need to talk to Talia.”

Levy huffs, then snarls at me before she stomps off. I watch her go and feel him come up behind me. “Let’s go for a walk. You look like you want to tear someone’s head off.”

“Yeah, your girlfriend’s,” I taunt. He grips my hand in his and starts pulling me. “Did you fuck her?” I ask him. When he doesn’t answer me, I tug my hand free. He stops and turns around to face me. “Did. You. Fuck. Her?”

“Yes.”

“Have you fucked her since meeting me?”
