It’s not pink or purple like his world.

But it sure is beautiful.

Chapter Ten

It’s late when I finally make my way back to the group. All of Max’s people are surrounding a large fire. Some stand off in the distance while others eat whatever food they are supplied.

When I pass Max, I can feel his eyes on me, but I don’t meet his gaze. I maintain my path to John’s home.

Pushing the door open, I hear a girl squeal, followed by a loud cry.

“Tamika, come here.” A little bundle runs toward me and then stops. She smiles up at me, and I bend down to her. “Hello.” Her cheeks go red in the sweetest blush. Tamika’s rosy cheeks remind me of Tatiana’s.

“Oh, you are back. Good. Pick that evil child up and join me for dinner.” I smile down at Tamika and offer her my hands. She thinks about it and, before I can pull away thinking she doesn’t want a stranger to pick her up, she jumps, and I just manage to catch her.

“You look just like your mama,” I coo, smiling at her as we walk into the kitchen. She giggles and pulls my hair.

“Same color as ours,” I tell Tatiana.

“She keeps me on my toes, that one.” Tatiana’s cooking on the stove and it makes my stomach grumble.

“That smells good,” I comment, walking to the table and sitting down, still holding little Tamika in my arms.

“I’m cooking the best for you. Does your king want to join us?” She wiggles her brows. John walks in and heads straight to Tatiana, kissing her cheek before he squeezes her hip and turns to us. He strides over, and Tamika reaches for him.

“He seems like a good king. His people respect him,” John says, and I can only nod. “Your lips are red.” He smirks.

“You kissed him? Is that the first time?” Tatiana gasps, abandoning her food and walking over to me.

“No, I was high on power the first time.”

“Wow, okay. So why did he kiss you, then?”

I touch my lips.

“He wanted me to know what it felt like without the power high.”

“Okay, swoon. He definitely likes you. A lot.” She sits opposite me and leans on the table. “I bet he’s a good kisser. Was it good?”

I nod my head, my stomach still fluttering. “It was.”

Tanya walks in, spots us, and sits down. John holds their daughter as he takes over the cooking while we all sit and catch up.

“So, the king has a thing for you. He’s very protective, that’s for sure,” Tanya says, reaching for the bowl in the middle of the table, picking up a delicious red apple, then biting a chunk. “No more you and Death, then?” she asks. “Do you really just get over someone like him? I mean, your king is handsome and all, but Death?” She rolls her eyes and sits back, biting her apple.

Tanya was always known as the quiet one of the three of us, but it seems she has come out of her shell a little more. She was never quiet with us growing up, only with others, but I can see a change in her now. I think it’s for the better, and I have a feeling it’s all to do with what happened with Veronica. She may not want to appear weak or to be used again.

The thing is, Tanya isn’t weak. Her powers just aren’t as strong as mine and Tatiana’s. But now she has Melvon—a very weird coupling, I’m not going to lie—and it seems to work.

“Tanya,” I say, ignoring the question.

“Hmm…”

“Does Melvon feed from you?” I ask, wondering where he would eat. Wolves and vampires don’t really mix well, so I’m surprised he’s still here.

She blushes.

“He feeds from me.” She pulls her top down to reveal bite marks at the top of her breast. I’m sure my face morphs into a what the fuck look because she quickly hides it. “I enjoy it, and it’s something both of us agreed to. He didn’t want to at first because he was too afraid it would hurt me.” She bites her lip. “It doesn’t… it makes me horny.”

John coughs from the cooking area, and Tanya blushes.

“What if he took too much? Vampires get addicted.”

“He doesn’t. He’s so careful, Talia. You don’t know him like I do. He’s careful with me.”

“But he is a vampire.”

“I’ve had these conversations with her already,” Tatiana says. “She is safe with him, believe it or not. He protects her. And that’s not from a spell, he just does it. We weren’t aware vampires could feel like we do. But Melvon proves they can.”

“He’s good to me,” she says again, and I reach for her hand.

“I’m glad.” I give it a squeeze and pull back.

“Is Max good for you? Or Death?” Tanya asks. “I feel like you may have to work that out.”
