I was having a blast myself, even snuck a wine cooler before Cody caught me and took it away. He threw away my damn drink, but I guess it’s only fair since he wasn’t drinking anything stronger than pomegranate juice; he’s such a diva.

Some people were playing games, some were just chatting, and others were flitting from group to group like social butterflies; it was awesome. The same guests who attended the soiree were in attendance tonight, and they seemed to be having just as good a time if the wide smiles on their faces were any indication.

It was my second party and my first without mom’s input, and I must say it was going much better than I could’ve hoped with about a hundred or more extra mouths to feed. We were about halfway through when I finally remembered Susie’s party, and that was because I saw some of her friends walk in.

I didn’t ask, but of course, it was obvious that they’d either ditched hers or never went. I was surprised that not only Tracy had shown up but two of the others as well. I’d invited Tracy for obvious reasons, but apparently, she’d talked the others into coming. The other two looked uncomfortably in my direction, but I smiled and waved, and that seemed to loosen them up a bit because it didn’t take long for them to settle down and join the other party goers.

I was about to see if we needed more food because at the rate the crowd was growing, it might be a possibility, but I wasn’t scared; I’d ordered more than enough, something else I’d learned from mom. Cody was right, though; I’m never doing this again. I much prefer having someone else stay on top of things as opposed to me having to keep an eye out and refill things as needed. I guess I’d inherited that gene from Blaire.

Steve came running inside where Cody and I were replenishing the soda fountain and pulled Cody aside. “WHAT?” Cody’s yell was enough to scare me into dropping the carbonator on the floor, and my heart jumped into my lungs when I saw the look on his face.

“What is it? What happened?” For the first few seconds, I’d reverted back to my old self, close to tears, and I didn’t even know what the deal was.

“Baby, don’t freak. I’ll take care of it.”

“Take care of what?” Before he could answer, Jess and Alexis came bounding into the room in a fury.

“That bitch broke your windshield.” I had to grab Cody from going outside.

“Oh no, you don’t.” I had a hard time keeping the smile from spreading across my face.

My finger had damn near been on the dial since this morning. “Daddy!”

“Hey baby, how are you? How’s the party?”

“Daddy, don’t get mad, okay, but something happened to the car.”

“Were you in an accident?” His voice went into full panic mode. Sorry dad, I didn’t mean to scare you.

“No, nothing like that. But someone just broke the windshield.” Before he could answer, I heard mom yelling in the background and sirens outside the sorority house. What the hell? “Dad, I’m fine; let me call you back.” I hung up the phone when I heard raised voices coming from outside. And then a voice came over a loudspeaker telling the crowd to move back.

Now we all went running for the door. Outside was a mess of confusion. There were about four campus police cars parked every which way while some of Cody’s boys surrounded a screaming Susie.

She saw me come out the door and tried to break through them, and I was busy tugging Cody back before he did something stupid in front of the cops. “Who the hell called the cops?” This was not part of my plan.

“Your mom!” I looked at Melissa like she had grown an extra head.

“How does my mom know what happened here two minutes ago?” She held up her phone and waved it at me.

“I called her, of course. As president, it’s my responsibility.” Since when? By then, the cops were walking over, and thankfully Cody was back under control though the way he was glaring over at Susie could be deemed illegal in some states.

“Are you Lisa Davenport?”

“Yes!” Mom, you called a lieutenant? How does she even know these people?

“You’re gonna need to come with us.”

“What? Why? I didn’t do anything.” Cody got between him and me and pushed me back out of harm’s way.

“You’re not taking her anywhere. It was her car that got vandalized.”

“I know that, but her mother asked us to take her out of here.” Cody started to argue, but I stopped him. If Blaire was behind this, it would take an act of the Almighty to change their minds. I don’t even have to imagine what she’d said to get them here this fast; I can recite it from memory. How had I never noticed before how cool it is to have an over-the-top helicopter mom?
