Devon is Grandma Kitty’s maiden name, and Simone is the name of her mother’s friend. I had no part in that.
“Isn’t that your wife?” I followed the reporter’s direction and saw her making her way onto the field.
“There she is.” I ran off, leaving him saying something which I didn’t hear.
“Are you going to do this every time I’m about to leave for training camp?” I laid down on the cold marble floor in the bathroom after puking up my guts. She continued putting crap on her face in the mirror, leaving me to die.
“Whose fault is that? I told you a thousand times, I can’t take the pill while I’m breastfeeding the twins. Who is the one who couldn’t wait long enough to put on a condom?”
“That’s because your damn kids are always cock blocking. I have to get it when I can.” My cold-hearted bride stepped over me and left the room. I guess she’s over it already since this was the third morning this week. I shudder to think what my life is going to be like now; at least there will be no more fighting over the kids.
Since we’ve all agreed that they should not be separated, they get to spend time with their grandparents on some kind of schedule they’d worked out between them. Their great grandparents have them every Sunday, rain or shine, and they never go anywhere without a battalion of baby nurses and nannies. The two of them have a staff of their own that follows them from house to house. Damn, kids are worth more than me, and I’m worth a lot these days.
“Get a move on in there; the elders are waiting.” I rolled to my feet and got myself together to go see what they were up to this time. Probably world domination. They’ve calmed down some since the twins were born, but not much. They’ve let me in slowly over the past year, but I know I have yet to reach the depths of this family and all that they get up to.
“Don’t tell anyone that I’m pregnant; let me enjoy it for a while before the craziness starts.” That’s what she thinks, but if they start in on me, I’m pushing her under the bus; they’d go easy on her if they know there’s a baby in her belly. Me, I get to answer questions as to what my plans are after I retire. I’ve only been playing for a year, mind you. But the Astor-Davenport clan loves to plan ahead.
Somewhere Near Woodley Park
“You’ve found someone, you say. That’s good because we’re running out of time; it’s been a year already. Grandpa Astor tickled his great-granddaughter under her chin as her brother played on his other great-grandpa’s lap.
“This one is the only option for what we have in mind according to our people on the ground. I’ve already had my people look into his background, and he looks even better than Powell.” Grandpa Davenport passed the dossier across the table to Grandpa Astor, who gave it a once over.
“When can we meet him?”
“There’s a wedding; we’re invited. The senator will be on the island. We’ll get our chance then.”
“Who’s getting married?”
“Daniel’s eldest granddaughter.”
“Colton’s girl? I always forget she’s about the same age as our Annalisa.”
“Speaking of which, the kids should be here soon. Then we can talk to the boy about our plans for his future.”
