I pushed the hair back behind her ear and kissed her cheek before getting to my feet to make her another cup of tea and grab myself a cup of coffee from the pot that had just finished brewing. I turned to find her watching me with the almost empty plate in front of her and my shirt hanging off her shoulders. The scene was so domestic it stopped me in my tracks.

Even with the slight tension in the air it already felt like we’d been here before, like we’d done this countless times together. It was a new feeling for me, sharing a morning like this with a woman I’d taken to my bed. In fact it was a first. But it’s one I accepted without question because it was her.

“Is there anything you need me to do for you?” The only thing I wasn’t sure how to handle was the upcoming funeral and of course the fact that she’d practically disappeared after leaving the police station wouldn’t go unnoticed for long. I wasn’t too worried about any of that right now though, my only concern is her.

She looked at me with such uncertainty and fear in her eyes it made my chest ache. Placing the cup down in front of her, I held the back of her head in my hand and stared into her eyes. “When you’re ready you’ll tell me. Just know I’m here, I’m always going to be from now on.”

I didn’t have to explain to her, any more than I needed her to explain her feelings for me. Though we’d never had a chance to share our feelings for each other, to put them into words, I never once doubted that she knew how I felt.

“You were holding my card in your hand last night, why didn’t you use it? What was it that made you change your mind at the last minute?”

“I told you, I didn’t want to be a bother.”

“Look at me baby.” I waited for her to hold up her head and look at me.

“Don’t ever do that again. If you need me call no matter what. Okay?” She nodded and held onto the cup for dear life. I took pity on her and left it alone. I realized that though I’d moved ahead by leaps and bounds in my head, she was still catching up.

She’d just lost her husband and no matter how or what I felt, she’d been with him for a few years, they shared a history. It’s only natural for her to have to come to terms with the loss. I didn’t like it one fuck but I acknowledged the fact that I’m a selfish fuck where she’s concerned.

The in house phone rang just then and I walked away to answer while still holding her eyes with mine. “What is it?”

“Sir, senator Moore’s aide is on his way up to your floor.” The fuck!

“What?” I turned away so she wouldn’t see my anger and become worried.

“I couldn’t stop him…”

“You’re fired.” I hung up the phone and walked back to her. “I’ll be right back, don’t move from there.” I kissed her forehead and made a quick exit.

I knew I was going to have to deal with him at some point today but this fuck actually had the balls to send someone to my place? I snatched the door open just before the burly man standing there could knock.

I didn’t say shit to him, just stood there blocking the door and waiting for him to tell me what the fuck he wanted. “Mr. Sorrento, I’m here for Mrs. Moore, is she here?” I didn’t have to guess how they knew where to track her down. The suits I’d chased off down at the station the night before had probably told them she was with me.

“What do you want?”

“I just said…”

“I heard what you said, did you hear what I asked?”

“As you know her husband just died, the senator...”

“Tell him she’s fine, anything else?”

“You don’t seem to understand…what exactly is your relationship with the senator’s daughter in law?” I didn’t even blink when I stared him down. Is this lackey serious?

“You must know the senator won’t like this...”

“Zero.”

“Zero what?” He looked confused as hell.

“That’s how many fucks I give. Now get out.”

I heard the soft tread of her footsteps behind me just then and looked back just in time to see her lose all the color from her face before bolting back down the hallway. What the fuck! I slammed the door in his face and went after her, catching up to her in the guest bathroom.

“What’s wrong?” I crouched on the floor beside her as she threw up her breakfast. My gut started to twist and turn with a very nasty feeling. Was she reacting this way to his presence? And if so why?
