I buried my nose in her hair and inhaled her sweet baby scent as my heart filled to overflowing. Her brothers looked over and made their way over to me for some loving, if she’d let them. She’s as territorial as her mother.

“I think they’re in the kitchen straining peas or some crap.” Kev came over to join us. Dave and I had just come through the door, but he was already here. Giselle had a shopping date with his main squeeze, Celeste, and he didn’t have shit to do so he came here to hang out with the kids.

It was weird to realize how different things were in the two years or so since the whole thing with the senator went down. These days the only trouble we have is with one of the kids getting sick or some other mundane thing.

Then again a common cold among the triplets is more than enough to make all the adults in the family go into a tizzy. Mom and dad has practically taken up residence, that’s when we’re not at their place for the weekend, and these two can’t stay their asses out of my home.

Maybe because Giselle, who’s been starved for family her whole life refuse to let them be. She’s always coming up with some shit for all of us to do together. Like I said, life is one big blast, except for the terror on my lap.

It’s not that my little angel is a bad kid, it’s just that there’s no precedent anywhere for the likes of her. She’s brave, opinionated and stubborn as all hell. Now she cuddled into me and stretched out across my lap so her brothers couldn’t climb up. “Behave!” I made room for them and she set up a screech like a banshee.

I ignored her shit and Dave moved over and took her. “It’s okay baby girl, uncle Dave’s here, don’t cry.” This fuck! The man who was scared shitless from the time he knew her mother was carrying her until the day she was born is totally suckered by her.

After telling me not to give her my wallet he gave her his and spent the next ten minutes trying to talk her out of eating the shit. I heard the door open and the girls laughing as they walked in behind me and my whole being settled.

She walked over and stood over me from behind until I looked up at her with a welcoming smile. “Hi pretty girl, how was shopping?” She leaned down for a smooch, “It was fun as usual.”

I watched her as she and Celeste greeted the kids before settling down with their loot spread out on one of the couches. As the two of them went on about their shopping adventure I watched her with a smile, the same doting smile I’ve seen on my dad’s face when he looks at mom, and felt settled.

My woman had more than come into her own. Gone was the scared down trodden woman who thought her life was basically over and in her place was a self assured, vibrant woman who basked in the love of her husband and the family we’d made together.

She felt my gaze and smiled over at me with that special look in her eyes that told me tonight was going to be hot. We’d found out two days ago that she was pregnant again and was waiting to share the news this weekend when we all gathered at my parent’s home on the island.

I was trying not to freak the fuck out, but figured I’d weather the storm. I’ve been doing pretty good so far and tell myself to look on the bright side. At least I have enough money to bail my daughter out of jail when she’s old enough to start her shit.

As for the senator, no one has seen hide nor hair of him in almost two years and there were plenty looking for him. If he ever made an appearance he was looking at a long stretch in jail. But only a handful of us knew that that wasn’t possible.

Not after I’d made a trip out to the desert to make sure he was well and truly dead months after the ordeal. I left this carcass right where he’d crawled in the belly of that cave to escape whatever the hell it is that lives in there. It was a fitting end to the monster that he was when he was alive.

She never speaks of him, or her past, her days are too preoccupied with me, and our children. But every once in a while she’d get that look on her face as if she was remembering and I have to drag her off to bed to fuck the thoughts right out of her head. Good times!
