“Foresight or discipline?”

Driver expelled a breath and pushed back his hair. It was messy, short on the sides and longer at the top, and now it was even more mussed, but something about it was attractive. Maybe it was the casual I-don’t-care attitude. Tam wanted to run his fingers through it too.

“You’re right. You barely know me and already you’re calling me out on my bullshit.”

“That’s not what I was trying to do—”

“Nah, it’s true. I’m fucking terrified of getting stuck in one place.” He shook his head like he couldn’t believe he’d just said that aloud. “Anyway, your turn,” he said, stepping away from the table.

Tam studied the rest of the balls until he found a simple shot. Unfortunately, to make it he had to stand right in front of Driver. When he slid into position, Driver didn’t step away.

Tam looked over his shoulder. “You mind?”

Driver was staring at his ass and didn’t look up when he said, “Not at all.” His tongue swept out to lick his bottom lip before he caught it with his teeth.

Well...fuck.

Tam took a deep breath and did his best to ignore the giddy quiver that had started in his stomach. He wanted to make this shot. As stupid as he knew it was, he wanted to show Driver that, though he might not be as experienced, he could still play the game.

Tam was high on possibilities. It felt like he’d overcome some major obstacle during their not-a-date. His limbs felt heavy and anchored while his heart and mind floated weightless.

He eyed his target ball then bent to take aim, purposefully drawing the cue back far enough to jab Driver in the ribs.

Driver grunted. Tam looked over his shoulder to meet Driver’s amused gaze.

“Point taken.” Driver lifted both hands and backed up, but only far enough that Tam’s weapon couldn’t reach.

Somehow, even though his hands trembled, Tam managed to sink that ball and then another. He was prepping for his third shot when Driver spoke.

“Should we make this even more interesting?”

Tam blinked up at him from across the green felt. “What do you mean?”

Driver rubbed his chin. “A wager.”

Straightening, Tam grip tightened on his cue. “You think I’m that naive?”

With a smile Driver shook his head. “Scared you’ll lose?”

Tam let out a pfft sound. He wasn’t scared to lose, he was afraid to win. “What did you have in mind?”

Driver’s grin was wide enough to rival the ocean. “If I win this round, you have to answer five questions honestly.”

Tam tipped his head. That wasn’t what he’d been expecting. And, in fact, the idea of answering Driver’s questions scared him more than being asked for sex. “And if I win?”

“Name it.”

His heart skidded to a halt. “Anything?”

Driver’s eyes seemed to deepen like endless night sky. “All you have to do is ask.”

Could he? Could he really?

Tam wasn’t sure he was brave enough, but all of a sudden winning was the only option.

Chapter Eleven

“You put up a good fight.”

Tam scratched his head and scowled at the pool table. So close, damn it. All he’d had to do was sink the 8-ball. “Don’t gloat.”

Driver’s laugh was silky smooth. “Are you pouting?”

“No.” Yes. Fuck, but he dreaded what was coming next. He’d rather drink a liter of pure vinegar than face the questions Driver was sure to ask.

“Aww, come on. I won’t be that hard on you.”

He didn’t believe that for one second. “Deal’s a deal.” Tam propped himself up with the pool cue and squinted at Driver.

“Will you be a good sport?”

Tam cringed. “Yes, just get it over with.”

“Okay, first question: Are you having fun?”

Surprise caused Tam to suck in a quick breath. “Huh?”

“Fun. Are you enjoying yourself?”

“Yes.”

Driver seemed pleased as he took a step closer. “Good. I told you we’d have a good time. I just wanted to make sure I was keeping my promise.”

Tam licked his lip, trying to figure out what exactly he was feeling. It was all too disorienting. Whenever he thought he had a handle on the situation, Driver went and did something unexpected. How was he supposed to puzzle out his own thoughts and emotions when Driver kept him on his toes like this?

“Second question: Do you want to hang out again sometime?”

A chuckle burst from Tam. He quickly covered his mouth with his hand. “You’re insane.”

“That’s not an answer.” Driver took another step toward him.

“Sure, we can hang out again.” Tam’s stomach fluttered.

“And that wasn’t my question. Are you avoiding the truth?” One challenging brow raised, Driver looked at him.

“You know what I meant.”

Driver didn’t reply but his look said he was still waiting for a real answer.

Exasperated, Tam said, “Yes. Fine. Yes, okay? I want to hang out again. God.”

“Good.” Driver looked to the ceiling, but he couldn’t hide his grin. He came nearer. They were only a foot away from each other now. “Third question,” Driver said. “How fast is your heart beating right now?”
