“I did. I’ve worked on it every time I had a delivery nearby. My neighbor helped me move the heavy stuff.”

Stepping inside, she looked around. “It seems larger now. What’s the tape for?”

“An idea I had. I know you work at an average-size desk with a bunch of things scattered around. I’ve had good recommendations for a woman who does remodeling jobs, including carpentry work. What would you think about having a desk set up here that runs the length of the room with cabinets above?”

“A desk this big?” Valerie asked, holding her arms apart as far as she could.

“That was my thought. I made a rough sketch but I thought we could talk about it more as we drove today.” Grayson pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket and held it out, pointing at different aspects as he spoke. “I thought you might wish to have some drawers here and a file cabinet here. A long workspace here and shelving above either with doors or not.”

“Maybe some doors and some open?”

“So, you could be messy some places and have things convenient, too?”

Her cheeks blushed red adorably. “Maybe?”

“I think those are good ideas. Shall I schedule an appointment with the remodeler?”

“Yes, Daddy. Let’s talk to her.”

Grayson immediately pulled out his phone and scheduled an appointment at six o’clock the following Wednesday.

Chapter Twenty-One

Jordi parked her car in front of the beautiful house featuring a large oak tree shading the front windows and a swing hanging from a large branch. Instantly, she had a feeling that good people had to live here.

Lifting her hand to ring the doorbell, she heard delightful giggling coming from the interior. She felt the corners of her cheeks tilt up. Curious to see the family inside, she pressed the button as she looked around the porch.

When the door opened, she greeted the handsome man. “Grayson Lee? I’m Jordi Cross with Cross Remodeling. You wanted a consult for an office?”

“Hi, Jordi. Call me Grayson. Thanks for coming.” He stood back to welcome her in, revealing a young woman behind him in a super cute sundress. “This is my fiancée, Valerie. The office setup will be for her.”

“Hi, Valerie.” Jordi noticed that the young woman held her hand out to look at her gorgeous engagement ring when Grayson said the word fiancée. This must be a recent event. “Congratulations.”

“Thank you,” Valerie answered with a sweet smile that made Jordi like her instantly.

“Let me show you the room we’re wanting to convert into an office,” Grayson said, leading the way.

As they walked through the large open space, Jordi noticed a couple of decorated coloring book pages attached to the refrigerator door. They were perfectly in the lines and looked beautiful as if someone had worked diligently to complete them. A magnet partially obscured words written at the top of one.

Did that say I love you, Daddy?

“This is the room,” Grayson said, sweeping an arm into the front bedroom.

Quickly, she rushed forward, trying to be more professional. She needed this job. Cross Remodeling had always been her dream. Now, she was taking a big leap into making it come true.

“I love the light in here. This is a great space for an office.” Noting the tape on the floor, Jordi asked, “Are you thinking about a wall unit that spans the length of the room?”

“We are. I made a rough outline of our thoughts but we’d love to have some suggestions if you’ve built a lot of this type of thing,” Grayson suggested before adding, “This will be Valerie’s office. She works from home, so it’s important it functions well for her.” Grayson handed the map to Valerie.

“This is what we’re thinking. I need some areas to stow supplies but I need a large area to put things out on display when I’m helping put together a final project,” Valerie tried to explain, pointing out several different areas.

“Have you thought of adding an additional space that wraps around this corner?” Jordi asked, extending the measuring tape she always carried on her belt. “You could add some other cabinets here and then have an extra work space that either comes down from the cabinets above or up from the lower ones. I’m seeing a lot of standing desks now. The top one would allow you that option.”

“That would be amazing. I don’t like to sit down, sometimes,” Valerie said, looking back at Grayson.

“I don’t want the upper cabinets too high,” Grayson said.

“No one wants to climb on a ladder to get stuff they need all the time,” Jordi agreed before suggesting, “You could extend the cabinets to the top and leave a display shelf at the top. I had a techie guy who worked from home and wanted a way to display his building block creations.”

Grabbing her phone, she pulled up that project and showed the pictures to Valerie and Grayson.
