“Why does it feel like you’re hinting for me to do that?”

He held up a hand in defeat. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

I sighed, leaning back against the wall of stacked hay. This was a lot more leg than I usually showed, and I wasn’t entirely comfortable. “I should go back and change. And put this dress in the washing machine.”

“Let me finish this and I’ll walk you back.”

“No. This isn’t really… a dress,” I said, tugging on the bottom of his t-shirt self-consciously.

Like I was showing a lot of leg. A lot. And I did have a lot of leg to show.

Max leant the fork against the wall and stepped away from the goat pen. He was gloriously shirtless, and despite my mild discomfort in this t-shirt, I couldn’t help but run my gaze over his body.

I swallowed.

The man was something else.

Without missing a beat, he laid his hands on my cheeks, cupping my face, and lowered his lips to mine. I felt the softness of his kiss in every fibre of my being. The hair on my arms stood up as goosebumps danced down them, and leaning into him was almost instinctive, something so natural that I barely even realised I was doing it until my toes bumped against his.

“Remember when Winston escaped? You were wearing running gear and told me you were searching for a rabbit under a bush?” he said in a low, soft voice that was just rough enough that heat pooled in my lower belly.

“Not my finest moment,” I murmured in response.

“No,” he agreed, smiling. “Do you remember what I said to you then?”

“You said a lot to me.”

“I said I thought you look great the way you are.”

“I’m impressed you remembered that. Mind you, it was a rare compliment, so perhaps it was easier to remember than a snarky comment.”

His shoulders shook, and if he tried any harder to hold in his laugh, he was going to explode.

At least that was how it felt.

“Well, I was wrong.”

I bit the inside of my lip, shifting as a bit of hay poked out and scraped across the back of my thigh uncomfortably. Spiky.

“I think,” Max said in a gravelly voice a little above a whisper, bringing his face closer to mine so that his nose brushed my cheek. “That you are perfect exactly as you are.”

He thinks I’m perfect?

“You think I’m perfect?”

“I do.” He brushed his lips over mine in the most tender kiss I’d ever felt. “You’re a little mouthy sometimes, but it’s not unbearable.”

“So are you,” I shot back, although I was smiling.

How could I not be?

He thought I was perfect.

Mouthy, but perfect.

My heart was racing, and I knew.

It was too late for me.

I was falling for Max, and there was no way I was going to be able to stop myself from hitting the ground.

“You don’t believe me, do you?” he said against my lips.

I shook my head, the tiniest little jerk of my chin to the side.

“Oh, Ellie.” He slid his hand around to cup the back of my neck and moved his body, pinning me against the wall of hay. His next kiss was different to the ones just now—this one was firm, needy, hungry. He gripped my hip, fisting the material of the t-shirt there so my entire thigh was exposed, and he flicked his tongue against the seam of my lips until I gave in and let him deepen the kiss.

Max slid his hand under the t-shirt and over my hip to my arse, grabbing it. Our bodies were flush against one another, and his hard cock pressed against me, almost teasing me with the idea of what could be.

Like this, it was hard not to believe that he really did think I was perfect.

He slid his hand down and curved it around the back of my thigh, and I let him lift my leg until his fingers were behind the bend of my knee. Max parted my legs, setting my foot up on the hay next to us, and fisted my hair at the nape of my neck, tugging my head back.

His lips trailed a hot path of kisses down over my jaw to my neck. I was a weak woman where neck kisses were concerned, and I was absolute putty in his hands when he gently grazed his teeth over my skin.

I slid my fingers into his hair, holding his lips against me. Sparks darted across my skin at the sensation of Max’s fingers slipping between my legs and brushing over the cotton of my underwear.

He brought his mouth back to mine to kiss me again, nipping my lower lip, and released my hair from his grip. He dropped to his knee, letting his hand fall down my side. One of his hands hiked the t-shirt up to my waist while the other hooked under my underwear and pushed it to the side.
