Of course he would. “Right now we need to concentrate on this job, not that one.”

“And on that, we can fuckin’ agree.” He tipped the beer to his lips again and once again, she got distracted with his throat.

Nova, this is not good. It’s only the first night and he’s no different than any of the other badge-carrying guys you’ve worked with.

Except that wasn’t quite true. Most of them did not look like Fletch. Or Ghost.

She needed to start thinking of him by his road name.

“Good. So, let’s get started since I’m beat and need to get some rest. What we don’t finish tonight, we can finish tomorrow.” She took a sip from her beer in an attempt to cool the warmth swirling in her belly.

He set his beer bottle on the side table next to the recliner, got to his feet and snagged a manilla envelope from the old, scratched coffee table placed in the center of the room. He tossed it into her lap, then returned to the recliner, once again settling in and grabbing his beer. “Crew and I created our new identities. I printed out our details. Also in that envelope is your new driver’s license and anything else you’ll need to become Sandra Douglas aka Kitten. As normal, we’re in the system with the info on those papers. Our new names, our new DOBs, new jobs, parents, etc. Nothing you haven’t dealt with before.”

Her brow furrowed. “Why are you acting like you’re in charge of this?”

“Simple. Because you couldn’t make those meetings. Just because you’re a fed, doesn’t mean you outrank me on a normal day. Since we’re both TFOs, we’re definitely on equal footing.”

“I never indicated that I outrank you, Fletch. I know how this works. And by the way, you’re speaking like a cop right now.”

His lips thinned. “Right. From now on call me Ghost, woman, and I’ll call you Kitten.”

“Can we make a deal that you don’t call me Kitten and I don’t have to call you Ghost when we’re alone?”

He studied her, his expression unreadable, and after a few seconds, he said, “Fine. Gonna give you that. But if I catch myself slippin’, that’ll have to change. Expect for you to do the same.”

“Then don’t slip,” she told him simply.

“Easier said than done.”

“I have faith you can pull it off. Now… What’s our new jobs?”

Before her very eyes, he once again slipped from cop to biker. “Ain’t a surprise the DAMC prez limited us to where we could work. Our choice was either the fuckin’ pawn shop downstairs or their gun shop. Tried to get you a job at their strip club, but wasn’t sure if you could… dance.”

“Ha ha,” she said humorlessly. “As you’ve probably noted by now, my tits aren’t big enough to be a stripper.”

“Not all strippers have big tits.”

“Ah, so you’re a regular patron of that type of art?”

“Let’s just say I appreciate the athletic ability, as well as the flexibility.”

“Sure you do. You probably watch porn for the plot, too.”

He grinned. “Nothin’ like enjoyin’ a grippin’ storyline.”

She swallowed her laugh. She was starting to agree with his earlier assessment. This might end up being fun. Her tight muscles loosened a bit. Though, that could be from the beer.

But the man had a sense of humor and he didn’t seem to be the typical type A, power-hungry officer, or even arrogant.

So far, at least.

She lifted the envelope. “I’ll check this out later. So, who’s working where?”

“You’re takin’ Shadow Valley Pawn and I’m takin’ the gun shop.”

“They have a range there?”

When he hesitated, she realized he knew more about her than she expected.

“Yeah, but heard how well you score when you qualify. Best you don’t use it unless it’s after hours. Don’t want anyone seein’ how well you can shoot. And if you wanna practice there, it’s best if I’m with you so we can say your ol’ man’s teachin’ you how to protect yourself.”

She nodded. “Got it. Because I’m Ghost’s ‘property.’ Can’t do anything without his permission.” Bile rose up her throat at the thought of women actually accepting that way of life.

“Wouldn’t go that far. Least not with this club as compared to others, but with the Demons that’s true, so it’s best we play that game so they respect me and will be more likely to wanna deal with me. If they see my woman back-talkin’ me or tryin’ to take lead on any deals, they’ll expect me to put you in your place. So, be prepared for Ghost to react as necessary. Even if that reaction is ugly.” He cocked an eyebrow and left the details of what that meant unsaid. “Got it?”

That was the second time he mentioned getting ugly. Her jaw tightened at what he hinted at. She might not like it, but they both knew they were playing roles. She could be mouthy but not to her ol’ man and not expect to be ‘corrected’ for it. Something she had to deal with Frank Sr. “Got it. I’d assume those are two businesses where we might hear chatter about the Demons, too.”
