Decker answered the task force leader with: Truck stop just outside of San Antonio. Next stop, the cartel’s lab house.

Hopefully that’ll give us some concrete answers. What do you need me to do?

Head over to my house and check in on them.

There was a hesitation before the next text came in. Rez told me he was heading over. Did he flake out?

He muttered, “Fuck,” under his breath. His fingers flew across the phone’s keyboard. No. He’s there. He was only supposed to check on them. Seems he’s moving in.

On Sloane.

What’s wrong with him spending time with Val?

Nothing, if that was all he was doing.

Wait. You worried about your nanny? Crew asked.

Don’t want him fucking shit up with her.

Now, how would Rez manage that? A laughing emoji was attached at the end.

Only, Decker didn’t find any of this funny. Just do it. Need to concentrate on this job, not worry about Rez diving down Sloane’s pants.

Guess Sloane’s the nanny?

Of course Crew already knew that and was only fucking with him since Decker was damn sure Rez already texted everybody about her. And how hot she was and how he was going to “tap” that.

You know, you should apply to be a federal agent with those amazing deduction skills. Bet they’d snap up a genius like you in a second.

Aren’t you just fucking hilarious as you ask me for a favor? came Crew’s reply. Another message popped up a second later: Will head over to the house and let you know the status.

He’d had no doubt Crew would do it. The whole reason why Decker texted him. But it was a given that the man would bitch about it first.

Decker warned: Might not be able to respond right away. Hiding in a bathroom stall right now. Need to get back out to the rig soon.

I’m already out and about. Won’t take me long to stop in. You’ll owe me.

Decker shook his head and quickly responded: You owe ME for volunteering for this suck-ass UC assignment when no one else would take it. This is the least you can do.

Be there in a few, came Crew’s response.

Decker tucked his phone away and made his way out of the stall before Chewie came searching for him. The biker had to be done fueling up the tractor by now.

Before leaving the bathroom, he lifted his arm, sniffed his pit and cringed. That confirmed it, he needed a damn shower and a change of clothes. Maybe he could talk Chewie into giving him enough time to take a quick rinse. He could also buy a clean sweatshirt off the rack and maybe some boxers, too.

That might give Crew enough time to get back to him before he had to climb back into the truck.

He headed out to find Chewie still in line to get diesel. Luckily, that gave him plenty of time to shower and change so he didn’t feel so damn crusty and smell so musty.

Just as he was done with his hot shower, he saw his phone light up where it perched on top of his stacked clothes. He tightened the towel around his waist and grabbed it.

Dude, I’m outside your front door and I can already hear Bonehead and Val singing Hakuna Matata. Is that from the fucking Lion King? I’m going in.

Report back.

We’ll see.

No, I want a status update soon. We’re about ready to hit the road again.

No answer.

He texted Sloane next. What’s going on there?

He had enough time to finish drying off before he got her message. You sent someone else?

To check on you. He grimaced and quickly sent: And Val. He quickly followed that up with a warning. Don’t let Rez sweet talk you. He’s an asshole. So is Crew.

Do assholes watch The Lion King and sing every damn song with a four-year-old? It’s both amusing and painful.

Before he could respond to her, he got an incoming text from Crew. Damn, Deckhead. She’s hot as fuck. Now I see why you’re worried. You hit that, didn’t you?

He sighed. She’s off limits. To both of you.

Crew’s texts began to come in rapid fire one after the other.

Why? She’s single.

We’re single.

Who’s to say she doesn’t want either of us?

Or even both.

At the same time.

There’s always a first time to run a train with Rez.

Now Crew was doing what Crew did best: busting balls. Don’t fuck up my arrangement with her for your goddamn selfishness.

Sure it’s us being selfish and not you?

He pulled a long breath in through his nose in an attempt to cool off the roaring fire in his gut.

The problem was, he was right. Sloane owed him no loyalty. None at all. They’d had sex once and only for Sloane to use him to get herself off.

In reality, what they owed each other was nothing other than the quid pro quo arrangement they made because of Val and Sadie. It had nothing to do with sex.
