Images of the dream I had while sleeping in the library come back to me. Again, the dream was so real and palpable. I can still taste her on my tongue.

I’m tempted to strip down and climb into bed with her to hold her and ease the pain of our link. However, as she kicks out and the sheet falls away, I’m reminded the dreams aren’t real.

This still isn’t a woman I can bed. She’s part beast. My heart sinks. I’m growing feelings for her, but we will only ever be friends. In my dreams is the only place where we can be more.

“Blaise,” I whisper as my suit jacket and shoes vanish before I climb into the bed with the rest of my clothes still on. “I’m here.”

She rolls into my warmth and snuggles into my embrace. My link stops pulsing and calms along with her. I tighten my arms around her and kiss her forehead.

“What are we doing to each other?” I murmur.

Turning to look out at the balcony of her room, I note the sky is starting to lighten. I get lost in thought as I watch the two suns come up. I fall back asleep after hours of thinking of a solution and coming up with nothing.

Chapter 16

In My World

Blaise

When I wake in the morning, I almost believe I’m having another dream. Argon is lying beside me, with his arms around me. His warm breath on the back of my neck is what woke me.

For a while, I refuse to move because I don’t want this to end. However, when he draws a hand down my side and gives my waist a gentle squeeze, I know I have to get up. Quickly, I use my magic to freshen my mouth.

I want to do more with my hair and clothes, but I don’t want to be obvious. I sit up and look down at my legs and tail. This is definitely not a dream.

I groan and roll my eyes. Argon runs the back of his fingers down my tail, sending a shiver through me. I bite down on my lip and peek over at him.

“It’s soft. Nothing about you is as I expect,” he says.

I look him in his eyes. His brows are drawn in thought. I shrug.

“You’re not what I expected either.”

He lifts to place a hand under his head and rests on his elbow. He looks so comfortable in my bed. My mind goes back to those dreams and seeing him naked in the orb. I wouldn’t mind finding him the same way now.

“What were you expecting, Blaise?”

“I don’t know. I thought you’d still be angry with me. I didn’t expect for you to become my friend.”

He lifts and we come face-to-face. I don’t know why I’m surprised to find him minty fresh. Clearly, he used his magic as I have.

“Am I your friend?” he breathes as he holds my gaze.

“I…I… um, I think we are friends. I want to be.”

He searches my eyes for a moment. I don’t realize I’m holding my breath until he falls back to resting against his elbows.

“So what’s the plan for the day? More reading?”

“No,” I say much too quickly.

My cheeks heat and I tighten my thighs. If only he knew about those dreams. I calm my racing heart and drop my eyes to the bed.

“Would you like to stay here… to talk? You can tell me about your world. I’d like to know more about you, if you’d tell me.”

“Sounds good to me. Maybe you can tell me more about you.”

I get ready to tell him I don’t know much about me, but I clamp my lips shut and keep the words to myself. As long as I keep him talking, I won’t have to reveal much about myself.

“Who are you, Argon?”

“In my world, I’m Prince Argon. Next in line to the throne of the kingdom of Kunglig.”

I gasp. “You’re a prince?”

He smiles. “Yes, my father is the king, but he will be turning the throne over to me soon. Well, that was the plan. Things seemed to have changed.”

“Oh,” I say and look into my lap.

“Don’t look so sad. I had questions about my future before I came here for my father.”

“Questions? What questions could you have? You seem like an honorable man. I think you’d make a great king.”

“I think I will lead well. However, there are other things that come with the throne that I have questions about.”

“Things like?”

He frowns and looks away. I get the feeling I’m prying. He doesn’t sound happy, yet I know he will honor his word and duties. That’s something I’ve come to know about him. I like that trait.

“We should eat,” he says instead of answering the question.

“We can have breakfast in bed,” I suggest, my cheeks heating.

“Sounds good. Do you mind if I change first?”
