“What the hell was that?” Bailey asks when we’re flying down the street.
I glance in the rearview mirror and see the bear chasing us, but I quickly leave him in the dust. I take a deep breath as I pull onto the highway and accelerate.
“You know my brother?” she asks again. “Roman!”
“Yes,” I quickly say. “We met a few times. It didn’t go well.”
“Did you guys fight?”
She’s looking at me and the last thing I want to do is cause her pain, but I can’t lie to her. “Yes, we fought.”
She drops her head into her hands and makes a noise that eats at my soul. “How many times?”
“Twice.”
She looks depressed as she stares out the window.
“I can’t have my mate and my brother fighting,” she says. “That won’t work. It can’t be like that.”
I swallow hard as I remember the furious grizzly bear chasing me down. It appears we have a long way to go.
But we’ll get there.
I’ll go anywhere and do anything for her.
Chapter Four
Bailey
“Where are we going?” I ask when I realize we’ve been driving down the highway for quite some time.
“I don’t know,” Roman whispers under his breath. “We can’t go back to my place. Your brother will be waiting for us on the road.”
I sigh, knowing he’s right. Enzo has always been so protective of me. He’s not going to let this go easily.
I start trying to think of what our next move can be, but the thought of being pressed up against this big sexy man beside me keeps taking over my brain.
I suck in a breath as I look at him. His tattooed arm is extended as he grips the steering wheel. I study his inked-up skin as he studies the road. I’ve never thought too much about tattoos on a guy, but I like them on him. Especially the roses around his elbow.
He’s watching the road, his face tight with concentration. I didn’t think I’d end up with a man like Roman. He looks so gruff and unfriendly. Like someone you’d walk across the street to avoid.
He’s a book you can’t judge by its cover or else you’re going to miss all of the magic inside.
If you look past the rough (and sometimes scary) exterior, he has a good heart and I can tell he’s going to treat me right.
I just wish that my brother could see that too.
He turns to me and his lip twitches up in a sexy grin. I feel a flood of heat rushing from my core to the area between my legs as those dark smoldering eyes fixate on me.
I feel like the most special girl in the world when he looks at me like that.
“We could…” I swallow hard, trying to get the courage to finish this tantalizing thought. “We could hole up somewhere for the night.”
“Just the two of us?”
God, the way he’s looking at me… I gulp.
“Yeah.”
He holds his breath as he turns back to the road.
“It was a stupid idea,” I quickly say when it’s clear that he’s not into it. How could I be such an idiot?
“No,” he grunts as he stares out the windshield. “It’s not.”
His knuckles are white as he grips the steering wheel. His whole body is flexed. What is going on?
“Spending the night with you is the best idea I’ve ever heard,” he whispers in a torn voice. “Nothing would make me happier.”
“But?” I can sense one coming.
He sighs as he turns to me with anguish in his eyes.
“Shacking up with me is going to be like shacking up with a hungry predator. I won’t be able to stop myself, Bailey. I won’t be able to hold onto control around you.”
I study my hands as his tempting words linger between us. I don’t know if it’s just me but the air in here feels thicker.
“Mates are meant to be together, aren’t they?”
He nods.
“Well, then maybe, that’s what we both need. To lose control a little.”
The heated look he gives me nearly causes my body to melt into the seat.
He’s the sexiest man I’ve ever seen and the sudden irrational need to lean over and take his cock in my mouth hits me with an almost unstoppable urge.
I squeeze my hands into fists and keep myself rooted in the seat as my mouth waters. There will be time for that later…
We drive in silence for a while until a nice hotel comes up on the side of the highway. It’s the type of place where people come in their Mercedes and BMWs to get away for the weekend. Where they can have a nice dinner at the five-star restaurant and sleep in a large comfy bed.
I don’t say a word as Roman pulls off the highway and drives up to it.
My whole body is tingling with excitement when he pulls into a spot.
