“I’m sure it was.”

“Can you say the same? Can you say you are seeing Jake for pictures in a magazine?” He steps closer to where I stand, still holding the door open.

“You should leave. I have to get ready.”

“For a date?”

“Yes, actually.”

That voice—it instantly has my stomach flipping.

We both turn to see Jake standing on the front stoop. He is dressed in blue slacks and a white button-up shirt with a couple of buttons undone at the top, and his sleeves rolled up.

“We have a date….” Jake’s eyes lock on me, “and you aren’t dressed.”

I nod, my body warming as his gaze travels the length of me.

“We were talking,” Kyler says. “You have some nerve. You know that, right?”

“Do I?” Jake asks incredibly casually. “It was you who let her walk away. Or am I mistaken?” Jake’s eyes flick to mine.

“You were my friend,” Kyler says angrily.

“Correction, Kyler, we were acquainted.”

“You were at our wedding.”

My eyes go wide at that statement.

He was?

How did I not know this?

How could I have missed that?

Our wedding was a massive spectacle. Elaborate—the word is not sufficient to describe the type of event we had solely put on for the cameras. I didn’t plan a single part of it, but at the time I was simply happy to be there because above all, I loved him.

“You were at my wedding?” I ask Jake.

Kyler huffs from the side, but I can’t concentrate on him and his bullshit. Instead, my eyes zero in on Jake.

“You should get changed. We’ll be late.”

“You never said anything,” I say to him, why wouldn’t be he say something to me, looking back at my husband. “It’s time you leave, Kyler.”

Kyler’s feet stay stuck to the ground, his mouth opens and closes as if he can’t believe what I just said.

“How dare you pick him over me, Oriana. We need to talk.”

I roll my eyes. “Please…go talk to Pamela. I don’t have time to listen to you or your excuses.” I wave toward the door where Jake is still standing. “You can leave now.”

Kyler looks between us both as he steps closer. “He isn’t who he says he is. Remember that.” I nod because that’s all I can give him as he storms out.

Jake steps in, completely unbothered by all the drama, and I shut the door behind him.

“He wants you back for the sole reason he can no longer have you.” Jake’s words hit me hard, and I know they’re true. But it doesn’t make the sting of them any less painful.

“I’ll get dressed,” I say, turning for my bedroom with a slight huff.

“I’ll help.”

I stop as I reach my door. “No need, I can get dressed by myself.”

“I’m sure you can, but I’d rather assist in the matter.” He gives me a grin that would melt my panties if I were wearing any.

Stepping into my room, I go to the three outfits I have on the bed and look back at him. I was unsure what type of event we were going to, so I laid out a few options to choose from.

He walks up, points to the one with the leather skirt, and says, “This one.”

“The event’s not dressy?” I ask.

“It’s an anniversary party. I was invited for the sole reason his wife wants people other than just their family there.”

“So, these are your friends?” I ask, curious. We don’t really talk about personal things, and for all I know, the stories of Jake tied to the mafia could be true.

“We work together.”

“Oh, okay.” I nod and reach for the outfit he picked, and he sits on the edge of my bed, watching me.

“You can get changed here. It’s not like I haven’t seen and tasted almost every inch of you.”

I smile at his words and look away before I drop the towel then slide my panties on, followed by a low-cut bra. When I glance back at him, his eyes are on me, locked and loaded.

“We could be late,” he husks.

“Late?”

Jake stands, backs me up to the wall, and is flush against my body before I can even blink.

It’s then I realize that Jake has never kissed me.

He has kissed and licked everywhere but my lips.

“What are you doing?” I ask with a gasp.

“Shh.” He leans forward, his mouth molding to my shoulder, his teeth digging in. Jake’s hand slowly crawls down my belly until it breaches my panties, and he dips in a finger, making me suck in a deep breath. “I think dessert should be had before the main course, wouldn’t you agree?”

I nod eagerly. How can I not?

“What’s your favorite dessert?” I ask.

His eyes find mine, and the playfulness sparkling in them is intoxicating.

“You,” he replies before he drops to his knees in front of me and removes my panties with his teeth while his hand continues to toy with me.
