“What?” he asks. “Are you at home or not?”

“Which home?” I ask, confused. “I only have one home, it’s with Harvey.”

“No, Oriana, it’s with me. And the home we created together.”

“You are mistaken. Now, what do you want?”

“Harvey hasn’t moved?” I hear the sound of a car door slamming.

“No, why?” My feet are frozen in place as I stare at the front door of Harvey’s home.

“I’m on my way.” Then he hangs up.

I could go elsewhere. Hide from him. But why should I be the one doing that? Kyler is the one who fucked me over. He is the one who stopped loving me. Granted, it takes two, but there is always one who checks out first.

And it was him.

Definitely him.

I persevered for so long, put up with so much, only to find he never cared about me.

I’m still standing in front of Harvey’s house when I see Kyler’s car pull up. He opens the driver’s door and gets out.

“Can we go inside?” He nods to the house.

“No.” He looks shocked by my answer but nods his head. “Why are you here, Kyler? You sent divorce papers. You’ve moved on. So why?” He scratches the back of his head as he lifts his phone with his other hand.

That’s when he presses play.

And a voice I know well comes through the speaker.

“Tell me you love the way I taste your cunt.” Followed by my moan.

My hands fly to my mouth as Kyler stands there, red-faced and angry. I lean over to see the screen, but it’s only a voice message.

How did—

“You’re fucking Jake King?” he asks with a huff. “Of all people…”

His remark and the way he says it makes me fume.

“I can sleep with whomever I want.”

“So you admit to fucking him?”

“How did you get that?” I ask, my face warm with embarrassment.

“Jake sent it to me. Wanted me to know what I was missing out on.” His jaw grinds back and forth. “And to thank me for giving you up.” I bite my lip and his eyes lock on me. “Did you enjoy it?”

I know he’s expecting me not to answer, but I do anyway. “Yes, very much so. He made me see stars with only his mouth.” I smirk, reveling in this asshole’s reaction.

He drops his phone from his hand, shocked and gaping.

“It’s not something you ever did for me,” I add.

“No, it’s not. Are you saying you didn’t like our sex life?”

“It was very…” I search for the right word. “Vanilla.” I know by the look on his face he doesn’t like the use of that word. Would any man?

“You need to stop seeing him. He has ties to the mafia. You know that, right?”

I didn’t, but I guess now I do.

“So?”

He shakes his head and leans down to pick up his phone. “I’ve thought about this…about us, a lot. I think this is over, and you should move back home.”

“I am home,” I tell him. “Do you know what yesterday was?”

His brow rises. “No?”

“My birthday.” I swing around and stomp up the stairs to Harvey’s house. What nerve this man has, standing there demanding what he wants and not even knowing he missed my birthday.

“Oriana.”

“I hate my name when you say it,” I whisper.

“You don’t,” he says, and he’s right. I don’t. But I thought it would be good to say it, to make him feel like shit. I feel him come up behind me and he whispers in my ear, “I miss you.” His breath tickles my neck before he kisses it.

A shiver takes over my body.

But do you want to know what?

It’s not the type of shiver it should be.

Kyler doesn’t make me feel giddy inside, electrified, not the way Jake does.

“You should go,” I manage to say. “Go to your new plaything. I saw you two kissing. Do you even remember the last time you kissed me on the lips, Kyler?” I pull back and step away. Turning to look at him, his mouth is open and his eyes are wide. “You don’t have a single clue. See, this is why we are no longer together. We don’t work, and that’s okay. One day, someone will work for me.”

“He won’t be it, Oriana. Don’t go down that rabbit hole.”

“I’m already down there, and it’s more than a little bit of fun.” I smile, completely uncaring of his opinion or his image. “Say hello to your new boo for me.” Opening the door, I slide inside and lock it behind me, then go to my room before I call Jake. I start pacing when he doesn’t pick up straight away, but just before I hang up and try again, his voice comes through, sounding sleepy.

“What?”

“You!” I yell into the phone.

“Fuck, woman, it’s early, and some of us work all night,” he grumbles.

“I don’t care. You, you, you…”
