My smile fully appears at the sight of her chest rising and falling. There’s a commotion outside the door, prompting me to move to drop to my knee before her. Sidney’s brows wrinkle. I wink at her, reaching into my suit pocket for the box I have resting there.

I open the box right as the door flies open. Sidney covers her mouth with her hand as the huge engagement ring comes into view. The confusion on her face can pass just as well for surprise. It’s a mix of both.

Just the reaction I was looking for, I think of my perfect timing.

Her reaction couldn’t be faked, not for what I’m about to pull off. Her gaze jumps to mine, but I don’t have the time I want to study her. I lose the smile on my face and turn to the disruption.

There are several officers standing inside my club office suite. I’m pissed at the nerve alone. This place is off-limits. Every cop in this city worth his salt knows this.

I look at the caramel, sour-faced brunette leading the entourage behind her. Her partner looks annoyed, as if he would love to be anywhere else. I can tell right away these two are going to make this interesting.

“What’s the meaning of this?” I bellow, rising to my feet.

“Sorry, Mr. Hennessy. We have warrants for both Ms. James and Ms. Sinclair’s arrest,” the older, tall, blond male officer says.

His female partner turns to glare at him, her brown face tight with annoyance. The art of war, find the cop that’s thirsty and use her ambition against her. It’s clear which one of the two doesn’t seem to understand the rules.

Bad move, I’ll eat her and her partner alive before this is over. Two uniformed officers step forward, getting ready to cuff Sidney and Chloe. I step in front of Sidney just as my reinforcement enters the room.

I feel Sidney move to stand behind me, her hands resting on my back. I swear my chest inflates like a teenager defending his first girlfriend.

“I’m Ms. James’s attorney. I’d like to see that warrant,” Vault booms into the room. The female cop turns and frowns. “That better be one airtight warrant. We’re all here to celebrate my friend’s engagement that you just ruined.”

“Fuck,” the blond officer mutters. “I…we had no idea. Listen, we can take this down to the station and get it all straightened out.”

“Sidney will not be going down to any station,” I reply dryly. “I’ll place a wager that your so-called warrant is bullshit.”

Vault snorts as he looks the document over. “Let me place a call. This will be over in a sec,” he mutters.

This is why I flew him in for tonight. This shit will be squashed in a moment. I watch as the eyes of the male officer widen and the female officer frowns. Her partner looks at her and scowls. The female officer starts to look a whole lot less confident.

“That warrant is legit,” she hisses at Vault.

“Good evening, judge. This is Valmik Schultz.” He takes a brief pause. “Yes, sorry to be calling so late. I have two warrants here in my hand this evening that say you signed off on them…Yes, concerning Clayton Hennessey’s fiancée, Sidney James and the other for Gregor Hennessy’s Betrothed as well, Ms. Chloe Sinclair.”

Vault takes another pause, a smile crossing over his lips. “Yes, yes, of course. These things happen. Of course, just a mistake. No, no, I’ll let you get down to your office to find the warrants you meant to sign,” Vault purrs.

“No, Judge, you’re not getting too old. Retirement is a long way off. This could happen to anyone. Thank you for clearing this up. No, I’m sure the officers here will be willing to comply. Yes, sir. You have a good evening as well.”

Vault turns a hard glare on the female officer. His gaze goes to her badge. “Detective Garret, I’m afraid you’re going to need to get in touch with Judge Harrison. There seems to be an issue with your paperwork,” he says ever so smoothly.

“You son of a—” she begins to hiss back.

“Don’t you dare finish that statement. You don’t know my mother and you have no idea what I’ll do to your career. I suggest that you wisely consider where you get your information from moving forward.

“Someone is out to ruin your career, as they are my clients’,” Vault steps in closer to officer Garret. “You’ve been sent on a fool’s errand, but you don’t look like a fool to me.”

“This isn’t over, my source was solid,” Detective Garret snarls.

The other detective snorts. “You’ve got so much to learn, kid,” he sighs and turns to leave with the other officers.

“Oh, my God, this is bullshit,” Detective Garret gasps as if in awe.

No one stops to pay her much attention. Vault is still hovering over her as she turns her fury on him. He remains unmoved by her glare.
