“I’d like that.” Einin’s sadness is bone-deep.

I can’t imagine losin’ Da and not knowin’, and then when I finally find out, realisin’ I’ll never get to say goodbye. The old man is gettin’ old now. I have to get up there and see how he’s doin’. And I’m sure it will be nice for Einin to be back.

“We need to finish up some shite at the club, and then soon, we’re takin’ a few days off.”

I don’t think he’ll mind. I’ve been workin’ every day for months, and I need the time to clear my head. There’s somethin’ I want to do up in my old home town as well, and I need Einin with me.

Suddenly, Einin asks, “Would you teach me to do what you do?” She waves her hand in the air. “For work I mean.”

“Ye want ta get into computers?”

“Yes, I think it will allow me to help other girls who’ve gone through what I have. And maybe even save a few who’ve been taken and sold off like livestock.”

I can hear the anger in her voice. It’s twisted around every word. I don’t blame her, to be fair. Over the years of me workin’ at the club, diggin’ into law enforcement databases, I’ve found so many cases of missin’ persons. Girls of every age, some even younger than I ever thought possible. I vowed I would spend my life catchin’ the bastards who do this shite, and I’m thankful I’m able to. It’s the reason I offered my services to the club. Monster’s focus on the criminal organisations is as strong as mine. Now that we know Bragan is behind the traffickin’, we can knuckle down and find the fecker.

“Then ye’ll work with me,” I tell Einin. If she thinks she can handle it, I’m not goin’ta deny her the opportunity to get her revenge. This way, I can keep her safe in the office while she feels as if she’s doin’ somethin’. ’Cause there ain’t a chance in hell I’m lettin’ her walk out into the line of fire.

“Let’s get ready then,” she announces before finishin’ up her breakfast and sashayin’ her sweet arse through my flat. When I hear the shower turn on, I follow close behind because I’m in need of another taste of my wee bird.

ELEVEN

EININ

Even though Tye agreed to teach me, I’m not sure I have a place at the club. When we walk in, I’m greeted with smiles and hugs, but I’m still a stranger. They don’t know me, and I’ve learnt over the years, people can smile, they can be friendly, but it doesn’t mean they like you.

Tye is the only person I’m connected to, and if he were to tell me to leave, I wouldn’t have a choice. At least I’m free. I could go back to Ballycastle and work in one of the few restaurants as a waitress or something similar. But it’s not where my heart lies. And those thoughts are plaguing me as we enter Tye’s office.

He pulls up a chair, which he sets beside his, and he gestures for me to sit. Once we’re situated, he turns on the multiple screens, and all I see are lines of numbers and text. It’s going to be a challenge to learn, but I know Tye will be able to show me the ropes. All I need is to focus.

“Are ye sure ye want ta do this? We can wait a few days,” Tye says when he glances at me over his shoulder.

Shaking my head, I meet his questioning stare. “Yes, I’m sure. The sooner we get started, the better.” I’ve made my decision, and I can’t go back on it. I don’t want to. This is going to help me heal. “I want to get this started. The new year is almost here, and I’m ready to start fresh. I’ve been given a second chance. I won’t waste it.”

A small smile plays on his lips. He knows I’m stubborn. I always have been, ever since I was a little one. Nothing has changed. And Tye knows better than to argue with me.

“Right then,” he says as he gets started with the explanations of what he’s doing.

The passion in his voice when he talks about his work is astounding. He’s always been good with tech, even when we were at school. But seeing him now, it’s as if he was made to sit here and do good with a few key strokes at a time.

After a couple of hours, I’m starting to fidget. There are so many names on the screen, so many missing girls, it breaks my heart. I was one of those. And all I can do is pray we find as many of them as we can, if not all. It’s a large undertaking, and it’s not going to happen overnight. But if we can make a dent in the enormous list, I’ll hopefully be able to feel less guilty for being freed.
