The answer was very fucked-up.

“Because you’re mine.”

The words rang in my head, along with the certainty with which he said them. Colby had not said that shit to get into my pants. He’d said it after he’d gotten in my pants. Other women might’ve been turned on by a hot biker declaring them ‘his,’ but that shit could not snap my legs together faster.

And Colby knew it.

Because, despite all my efforts to the contrary, Colby knew me.

He said it even though he understood that those words would have me fighting him tenfold.

And though he might know a lot about me, more than I’d intended, he did not know everything. Because if he did, he’d never be declaring that I was ‘his.’

I slammed my whisky glass onto the counter after I finished, taking a deep breath before painting a seductive smile on my face, adjusting my lingerie and turning on the camera. It was showtime, baby.

“We need more info on this fuck,” I said as I leaned in to do my mascara.

“I’ve got all the information the police have, maybe more, yet I don’t have shit,” Ollie replied, clearly as frustrated as me. Violet was dear to her too. And she really wasn’t hot on a serial killer waltzing around, killing women at will and getting away with it.

“Do you think he’s connected to the club?” I asked, biting my lip and frowning at my reflection.

That had been my fear since the details of what happened to Violet and Jenna had become clear. The killer had known how to get in and out of the club compound without being seen.

Ollie sighed, and I heard the sounds of keys clacking as she typed. “The killer obviously had at least a rudimentary knowledge of the clubhouse itself to be able to get past the security they have, which isn’t anything to sneeze at.”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. “It couldn’t be anyone inside the club, could it?”

She laughed. “I ran background checks on every single patched member and prospect, which gives me a bunch of nothing since they’ve all got records of some kind and are all obviously violent,” she continued typing. “But not a single one of them has a crime against a woman in their files. Again, not that that means anything. Whoever is doing this is smart. I’m saying that because I’m a fucking genius, and I don’t even have a lead.”

She was frustrated. As was I.

“We can’t rule out a member,” she continued. “But I personally think it’s unlikely.”

I agreed. The Sons themselves were not fucking stupid, and they vetted their members and then had a prospect period of at least one year.

“Okay, so time to try a new approach,” I said, slipping into my dress.

It was simple, but it clung to my every curve. My hair was bouncy, shiny and untamed around my face. I’d done my makeup to look natural, but it literally took two times longer than some of my more dramatic looks.

“Do I even ask what that means?” Ollie asked.

I smiled into the mirror. “It means I’m going to seduce a sheriff.”

It wasn’t as hard as I’d expected it to be. When we’d had the showdown at the police station, the sheriff had seemed stiff, far too professional and like he would be a hard nut to crack.

But in reality, all I needed was hair, tits, ass and a great dress. Which I had all four of.

I’d been leaning against a squad car when he came out.

He frowned at me as he walked up.

Like I’d noticed the first time I saw him, he was a handsome guy. Square jaw, sandy hair, tall, with a purposeful walk. He also wore the shit out of his uniform. Not that I was really into guys in uniform. I kind of resented authority figures of all types.

I was more into men who wore uniforms in the form of leather cuts that announced their abhorrence for authority.

But I wasn’t thinking about that right now.

I was on a mission.

“Not interested in another episode, Miss Cardoso,” he said when he stopped in front of me.

I grinned at him. “It’s Ms.”

He didn’t grin back, but I did see him do a quick sweep of me from head to toe. He tried to hide it, but I was an expert in men’s reactions… He liked what he saw.

“And I promise, I’m not here to cause trouble,” I added. “Well, unless you’re into that.” I fluttered my eyelashes.

He cleared his throat. “Ms. Cardoso, I’m a busy man.”

“I’m aware, but even busy sheriffs have to eat.”

His brow quirked, but he didn’t reply.

“And even busy sheriffs get lonely,” I murmured. “Especially in a town where the most eligible bachelorettes flock to the club you seem to despise.”

As I’d expected, his lip curled at the mere mention of the Sons of Templar MC. He really hated them.
