Growling in reaction to her primal response, Beau shifted his hips and entered her tight warmth in a single stroke that drove the air from her lungs. He didn’t give her time to recover, thrusting repeatedly deep inside her. Sliding his fingers between their bodies, he found that hidden bundle of nerves and tapped on it. Slowly, he increased the speed as he filled her.

So close, Maisie dug her fingernails into his shoulder. She bit her lip as she concentrated on those shimmering sensations looming around her. “Daddy, please,” she whispered.

Pinching her clit, he ordered, “Come, Little girl.”

With a cry, she exploded around him, dragging Beau with her into pleasure as their bodies shuddered together.

CHAPTER 15

Maisie smoothed her velvet gown into place and admired her engagement ring. She would never have allowed Beau to buy her such an extravagant beauty, but she knew it was important to him to show the world how much she meant to him.

“Wow. I don’t know who picks out your clothes, Little girl, but that dress is a killer.”

Seeing the heat in Beau’s eyes, she blurted, “Is it too much? I can change.”

“No way. You look incredible. I’m going to be the envy of everyone at the fundraiser.”

“What are they raising money for?”

“To provide mammograms for those without insurance coverage.”

Instantly, tears flooded into her eyes. “If only Mom had said something, I would have paid for her mammogram and treatment.”

“Hey.” Beau walked forward to wipe the tears from her long lashes. “Your mom knew that. She didn’t wish to pursue any treatment. That was her choice. As much as you wish she had fought, your mom deliberately made her decision.”

“I miss her,” Maisie whispered.

“I know you do. Want to head back to Avondale next weekend to visit our parents and friends?”

“I’d love that.”

“Then that’s what we’ll do. Blink away the last of those tears and let’s go celebrate what massive donations can do for others,” he suggested, taking her hand.

When they walked into the ballroom, Maisie felt incredibly out of place. She who had worn cardboard in her hand-me-down shoes to make them last longer shouldn’t be here.

Beau stroked a warm hand down her spine. “Who has an IQ higher than you do?”

“Statistically? Two percent,” she answered, off balanced by his question but able to put the icky thought out of her mind immediately.

“Remember that. They’re lucky to rub elbows with you.”

“Senator Granville, I’m so glad you could make it tonight.”

“Benson, I wouldn’t have missed it. Thank you for your help in trying to get the bill through,” Beau said, shaking the man’s hand.

“We’ll get it next time. In the meantime, we’ll raise a bunch of money to provide those serving women in need,” the elderly politician stressed before turning to look at Beau’s companion.

“I don’t believe I’ve had the pleasure to meet this lovely woman by your side,” the older man said, looking at Maisie.

“This is Dr. Maisie Woodson. You’ll be the first to congratulate us. Maisie is my fiancée,” Beau said proudly. “Maisie, this is one of my trusted colleagues, Benson Miller.”

“You chose well, my friend,” Benson said warmly. “Maisie, I’m glad to meet you.”

He turned to wave at his wife. “Adriana, come meet Beau’s fiancée.”

The woman scurried to his side as rustles of whispers spread through the room. Beau kept his hand low on her back. Maisie knew he was giving her support and strength not to react to the news flowing across the room.

“Benson. You just made the announcement for Beau. I’m sure he wanted to share the wonderful news with everyone himself,” she said. “Please excuse him, Beau.”

“It’s not a problem, Adriana,” Beau reassured her gracefully.

“You are very gracious, Beau. Introduce me to your fiancée,” she requested.

“Adriana, this is my Maisie.”

“Maisie. What a beautiful name,” Adriana said, smiling at her.

“Dr. Maisie Woodson,” Benson added.

Maisie could tell he relished having insider knowledge. Beau’s colleague was definitely a character.

“A doctor? Smart, Beau. She’ll keep you healthy,” Adriana said.

“Oh, I don’t practice medicine. I’m a research scientist with a think tank here in DC,” Maisie said quickly.

“That sounds very brainy. I think I’m glad you’re working on the world’s problems,” Adriana said before glancing at Maisie’s hand. “Oh, how lovely. May I see your ring?”

Feeling uncomfortable, Maisie extended her hand for the couple to ooh and ah over her jewelry.

“You did good, Beau,” Adriana said with a nod of approval. “Now, don’t let us keep you from sharing your good news.”

“It was great to see you,” Beau said with a smile to the couple before steering Maisie away.

“I don’t enjoy being a show pig in the arena,” Maisie whispered from the corner of her mouth as she maintained her smile.

“This will all blow over. Being complimented on their engagement ring is what most women want when they get engaged.”

“I’m not most women,” she hissed.
