I just need to go out and have fun. Stick to the plan.

The worst that could happen is Sebastian ends up being a dick like Roger.

I toss on a T-shirt over my harness, check my hair in the mirror before saying good-bye to Cody and heading out.

Sebastian meets me by the street behind Metropolis, and we walk to Cockfight. It’s a couple of blocks away, which gives us time to chat. He fills me in on some family drama he encountered over Thanksgiving while I tell him about how lucky I was to have stumbled into a pretty awesome one with my friends and Mom.

When we get to Cockfight, the music is blasting and the place is packed. The majority of guys are shirtless with their harnesses on, so Sebastian and I take off our shirts and tuck them into the backs of our jeans before grabbing drinks at the bar.

“I got a little surprise for you tonight too,” Sebastian says.

“What do you mean?”

“Just wait.”

We dance for a bit. This is my favorite part of coming out, the thing Lance would never fucking do with me.

Sebastian comes up behind me and slides his arms around my body, pushing his pelvis against my ass and moving his hips side to side. He presses his hand down on my abs to pull me closer. I follow his lead to the beat.

Considering what Cody mentioned about what a good bottom he is, I find our positions ironic right now. I go along with it, enjoying the remix that’s playing, gazing around the dance floor at the beefy, sweat-soaked men, a few who are so out of it and erratic in the movements that I’m fairly sure they’re rolling. Tension rises within me as it reminds me of my time in LA and of what Cody told me about his past the other night—when he said he did “drugs and shit.” We have that in common. Although, for me, I was trying to escape because I didn’t know who the fuck I was. I didn’t have a good excuse. I have a mom who would’ve done anything for me. Sounds like he wasn’t so lucky. So while Cody figured out his passion for tattoo art, I wasted my youth on parties, sex, and drugs—anything to numb that feeling that I wasn’t good enough.

“You mind if we take a breather?” I ask Sebastian.

“This is actually the perfect time for me to show you my surprise,” he says.

I eye him curiously, and he takes my hand and leads me to the bar.

Sebastian approaches a guy sitting on a stool.

“Hey, Tiny!” he says.

The man turns around in his seat. When he sees Sebastian, he smiles and pushes to his feet.

He’s a fucking giant. Sebastian’s tall, but this guy towers at least half a foot over him. He has broad shoulders, a bald scalp, and a thick graying goatee.

He hugs Sebastian, and as they pull apart, Sebastian says, “Tiny, this is Hayden. Hayden, this is Tiny.”

We shake hands, and Tiny says, “So you’re that math genius Sebastian was telling me about.”

I assume this must’ve been the guy Sebastian was telling me was looking to hire people for his company. At least, that’s the only thing that makes sense to me.

“That’s me, I guess.”

“It’s a pleasure meeting you.”

“I’m gonna grab another drink real quick,” Sebastian says, abandoning me with Tiny.

We chat a little bit. He wants to know about my interest in math, so I tell him about how I was always good at it, and he starts talking to me about an equation he stumbled across the other day on a forum he frequents. Then we get to talking about what I’ve been working on with Doc, and I explain some of the shit that I helped him with. Not so much trying to pitch myself as much as genuinely eager to share some of the stuff that I’ve learned since I started helping my buddies out.

“So all of this is just stuff you’ve done for the hell of it?” Tiny asks.

“I mean, I like it.” I shrug.

If Sebastian was hoping I’d get some sort of in with this guy tonight, he’s mistaken. I’m not fighting for a job as much as just chatting about nothing.

Tiny eyes me curiously and nods.

“How’s it going?” Sebastian asks as he steps up beside us.

Tiny chuckles. “Your friend here just proved to me that he knows his shit. Usually, when I start getting into conversations about taxes, people get totally lost, but I can tell he’s done his homework.”

“I told you. Cody wouldn’t praise him for nothing.”

We chat with the guy some more, but despite how impressed he seems, he never mentions anything about any kind of job. Not that I’m surprised. And I don’t even have a degree, so I’m not sure what the hell I could do for him anyway. When we’re done talking to him, Sebastian and I hit the dance floor again.
