They must have been making a fortune off of the wolf fights as they’d brought a lot of hunters to the pack.

“Reese is down,” Caleb said. “He’s been shot.”

“They’re in the house. They’re in the house!” Reese kept on screaming in his head, and it didn’t take David long to realize it was their home, the one where the women were hiding.

Charging toward the property, he knew he had to turn into a human to get inside.

Once at the door, he had no choice but to shed his wolf fur and stand on two feet. The moment he did, he felt the bullet graze his shoulder.

He didn’t flinch as he walked into his home. The scent of the gunpowder was strong.

Heather was in danger.

He heard movement upstairs and at the same time, the creak of the flooring near the main living room.

All he wanted to do was rush in, to take the man down, to tear him to pieces, but instead, he took his time, walking slowly.

The creaking of the floorboards drove him crazy.

Heather’s scent was all around him as well. His wolf was making it hard for him to focus. His wolf wanted to get to Heather, to protect her.

In and out.

He took several deep breaths, trying to gain control, but as he got to the stairs, he saw Maddox was there as well.

David wrapped his fingers around the man’s neck.

“I knew it. You’re one of them, aren’t you!” He wanted to kill him. This man had touched his mate. All he wanted to do was hurt him, to see the life slowly ebbing away from his eyes.

Squeezing his neck, he thought about Heather. His mate. This bastard had put her in danger.

“I would never be that fucking scum,” Maddox said. “I owe Heather my life. I will never see her harmed. I will do whatever I can to protect her.”

David let him go after a few seconds’ hesitation. It was a life debt. One that couldn’t be undone.

Mika’s wolf rolled down the stairs, entangled with a badly injured human male. She finished him off and rushed after another man coming in the front door. His sister-in-law had a very capable beast.

Upstairs, he heard Heather scream. There was a bigger problem than an unmated male attached to his female.

Heather had gotten Bethany to hide in order to protect her. She’d been hysterical when she’d seen Caleb shot, too upset to realize his wolf could heal most injuries.

Heather knew the moment the hunters entered the house. She smelled them. If evil had a scent, it would be exactly the same stench as the man who was coming toward her. It left a bitter taste in her mouth, made her feel slightly sick. Her sister had kept the humans at bay when they got too close, but there were so many of them.

Moving from room to room, Heather tried to make enough noise to distract the hunters. Each step purposefully done as she tried to get to the stairs. She needed the remaining hunters out of the house. When the floorboard creaked downstairs, she had no choice but to retreat, rounding the hallway into one of the bedrooms and stepping back from the door.

Her heart raced.

Sickness flooded her body, and her thoughts were devoted to David. They hadn’t even had a proper mating. She wanted to be with her mate more than anything, not stuck in this room, potentially about to die. Was the pack safe? Was her sister still alive?

Just as she went to advance toward the door, it was flung open and something hard and metal struck her across the face.

“I knew there was something off with you. Off with the both of you.” Before she had a chance to gain her bearings, she was struck again, forced to the floor. Her vision swam, sounds muted as if she were underwater.

Pain slammed through her face, and her precious wolf was pissed. They didn’t like to be hit. It was time to shift, to regain her bearings before something much worse happened.

Her body rippled, getting ready. The tension flooding her body as she sensed him raising the tool once more as if to strike her, but before he got the chance to bring it down, she reacted.

She grabbed the tool as it was about to connect, and slammed her other palm against his chest, throwing him out into the hallway.

“Yeah, that’s it. You’re all a bunch of fucking freaks. I’m going to make a fortune off each and every single one of you.”

Heather wasn’t going to allow this man to make a cent ever again. He raised the gun and she had no choice but to pause.

If he aimed for her heart and head, she was done for. There was only so much they could heal from. She wasn’t a fool to take that chance, even though the thought of snapping his neck was strong.
