“Ready to brush your teeth and jump in bed?” he asked, looking at the clock.

“Yes. I’m totally wiped out.”

“Need Daddy to give you another shower?” he asked.

“No, I think I can live with how I smell tonight.”

Trace leaned forward and sniffed her hair. “You aren’t too offensive,” he kidded her. “Let’s go get you changed and tucked in bed.”

Avery took his hand and led him down the hall, stopping so he could pick up his duffel bag. After they stowed their guns in her bedside safe, she pulled her nightgown out from under her pillow on the side she always slept on in the big bed. Trace turned down the bedspread before tugging her nightgown from her hand to drop it on the sheets.

“Let Daddy undress you, Mae Bug.”

She nodded and tried not to be embarrassed as he removed every article of her clothing with kisses and caressing hands as he revealed her skin. When he lifted her to sit on the edge of the bed, Avery reached for her nightgown.

“Not yet, Little girl. Daddy wants to tell you a bedtime story.”

“I have to be naked for the story?” she questioned.

“Yes. For this kind of bedtime story.” Trace lowered himself to his knees. “Lie back, Mae Bug.”

Slowly, she kept her gaze meshed with his to make sure she understood what he intended. When her back touched the cool sheets, he tugged her to the edge of the bed and lowered his mouth to kiss her inner thighs. Reaching a hand out, Avery snagged Weenie from the pillows and held her stuffie over her eyes, being sure to guard the kitty’s eyes from seeing anything.

His answering chuckle tickled her intimately before he pressed a kiss to her shaven mound, making her shiver with pleasure. His fingers parted her lower lips without any other prelude, and Trace tasted the slick juices gathering in her pink folds. He devoured her as if she were the perfect dessert he craved as his fingers slid deep inside her. Her climax hit hard and fast, the second almost immediately rocking her body as she responded eagerly to his touch and mouth.

When Trace finally lifted his head, Avery felt completely boneless. She allowed him to help her into the nightshirt and lift her body to rest against her pillows. Her eyes never opened as he tucked the covers around her neck and placed Weenie in her arms.

“Sleep tight, Mae Bug,” he whispered, sliding her pacifier into her mouth.

“Daddy,” she mumbled, barely processing that he’d found it in her nightstand drawer as she settled into her favorite position to sleep. Listening to him move around the room, Avery allowed herself to crash into sleep. Her Daddy would take care of her now. She could relax.

Chapter Fifteen

Trace was exhausted by Friday night and looking forward to a weekend alone with his Little girl. She’d worked long hours this week, same as him. For him, it was in his nature, plus he’d wanted to be sure he had a firm understanding of every dynamic in the office by the end of the week.

Within a few days, Trace had learned Avery was as dedicated to her job as he was. She was often the last person at her desk at the end of the day.

On Wednesday Trace had met with Nicoya about a case. The hard-working detective had paused at the door to his office before opening it to leave. She’d turned back toward him, hesitating.

Finally, she’d spoken. “I know it’s none of my business, but I just want to say that Avery Reynolds is one of the finest detectives I’ve ever met. She’s a gem. I’m so glad she met a nice man who appreciates her.”

Trace had been stunned by the woman’s admission and stared at her as she left without waiting for a response. All he’d been able to do was smile.

Most of the detectives had left for the day when he finally came out of his office to find Avery flipping through a tall filing cabinet, her brow furrowed in frustration.

“Did you lose something?” he asked as he approached.

She took a deep breath and ran a hand down her face. “I lost a lot of things. My paperwork keeps disappearing from my desk.” She lifted the Little Cakes paperweight and pointed unnecessarily to the spot on the desk where there was no paperwork.

“I assume that’s where you keep your open cases?” he asked.

“Every day since I started working. I thought Wyatt was filing for me or something. He said he hasn’t done so. It’s not you, is it?” She glanced up at him.

He shook his head. “No. Sorry.” He looked around.

“It’s maddening. I can’t file my reports without my paperwork. I don’t even know what I might have missed this week.”

Trace frowned. He did more than frown, actually. He was furious. After taking a few deep breaths, he rubbed his temples. “Let’s deal with this on Monday, okay?”
