All of his arguments are things I’ve thought of, but the fact remains that I can’t afford it right now. “In time.”

“Maven,” he says impatiently. “You don’t have time. If Nogales says war, then it’s inevitable, and you’ve worked too damn hard to make this place the success that it is. Protect it, no matter who’s offering the protection.”

“Yes,” Willow says from the doorway.

“No,” I answer at the same time. “And just what is this protection going to cost me?”

“Maven,” Willow calls out to me. “I love you, and I love working here, but the Iron Kings are some seriously bad guys, and I don’t want to be here without protection the next time they show up.”

“They won’t,” I insist.

Willow lets out a bark of bitter laughter. “Cyrus will, and I doubt he’ll be alone now that he has backup. You saw how angry he was earlier. I mean, Jesus Christ, he choked you!”

Shit, I hadn’t thought of that. “Still, I don’t want to owe anyone just to keep running my shop.”

Wilder steps forward and drops both hands on my shoulders. Instantly, he pulls back, and I know he feels that electricity humming between us, the spark that I am desperate to ignore.

“No strings,” he says and drops his hands to his sides. “I’ll keep an eye on the surveillance equipment to make sure there are no threats during or outside of business hours, but you’ll also have access to it.”

“And that’s it? Sounds too good to be true.” And in my experience, things that sound that way usually are that way.

“If you hear something you think could be useful to the Reckless Souls or anything happening around Angel Harbor that might cause problems and you want to pass it along, we’d be very grateful. If not, well, that’s your call.”

“You don’t want keys or access to my register?”

His lips twitch. “No. Nothing like that.”

I’m not sure if I can believe him, now or in the future, but I’m in no position to turn away this kind of help. Cyrus was scary as hell earlier, and Willow is probably right about him coming back with reinforcements. And he knows Reckless Souls frequent my business, which already puts me in the middle. “Fine,” I sigh. “I’m in. I guess.”

“Great,” Willow shouts, her tone a little too bright. “I’ll get started on your order Wilder.”

He nods and follows her out of the kitchen, but not before sending me a long, heated look that I feel down to my bones. “See you soon, Maven.”

His words sound more like a threat than a promise, leaving me to wonder if this is just another mistake I’ll live to regret.

If I’m lucky, I’ll live to regret it.

Chapter Six

Wilder

Pussy is very easy to get when you look like I do and belong to a motorcycle club. Believe me, I take full advantage of the easy fucks that come my way.

But a woman like Maven, older and wiser with all that fire burning inside her? That’s a challenge I am more than up for.

When I leave For Goodness Cakes with my bag of the best breakfast in Angel Harber, the only thing I’m thinking about is how it would be to fuck an older woman like Maven.

I bet she’s got all the right moves. All that experience.

Jesus, I must be sick in the head. She just broke up with a guy, and I’m thinking about a piece of ass.

Well, no one’s ever accused me of being a saint.

“Goddammit,” I groan as the ride back to the clubhouse gets a little uncomfortable because my damn cock is wide awake from Maven’s antics. “Stubborn woman.”

Maybe I’ll fuck her good and hard, not just because I’m dying to after today’s encounter, but because someone needs to fuck some sense into her.

Whether she wants to believe it or not, Maven is in real danger now that her ex is wrapped up with the Iron Kings.

Nogales is a crazy son of a bitch on his best days, and with Hector’s sudden disappearance, he’s gotta be scared and unsure what to do next. He’s the kind of guy who is a perfect second-in-command because he’s crazy and down for the cause. Still, he’s reckless, rash, and too fucking insane to lead anybody, never mind a group of untethered fuckers like the Iron Kings.

Luckily for me, by the time I get back to the clubhouse, I have exhausted my thoughts of laying Maven out and fucking her until she begs me stop because that’ll have to wait. Now I need to let Ace know everything she just told me.

“Yo,” Shades calls out when I step inside the dimly lit bar. “What did you bring me?”

“What did you ask for?”

His brows dipped behind a pair of godawful-looking orange and gray sunglasses. “I didn’t know you were getting food.”
