This was simply how it was between us now.

I was his and he was mine. It was that easy.

Except, of course, it wasn’t.

Chapter 30

Weston “Major” Marian

Not only did Doc sleep over that night, safe and secure and sexy as hell in my arms, but he managed to stay over two more nights over the course of the next few weeks. I tried like hell to take things slow between us since I knew the minute any inkling of our new relationship got out, there would be big trouble not only with his family but with the entire town. I may have been a well-respected retired lieutenant colonel from the army and foreman to the large Hobart farm, but in many Hobians’ eyes, I was a simple cowhand. And luring the vaunted Dr. William Wilde over to the dark side would make me persona non grata in a skinny minute.

So during the day, especially around his parents and the kids, we were best friends as usual. Well, probably less so than usual because I was so worried about my feelings for him showing like neon lights on my face.

But those few times he was able to sneak away to my house and we could be ourselves together made up for it. We’d gotten ourselves off with quick mutual masturbation sessions, and then I’d teased him for over an hour with my mouth everywhere on his body before sucking him down while sliding a finger inside him and introducing him to his prostate. He’d been so thankful, he’d even offered to reciprocate by trying his hand at a blowjob. But his blissed-out face and half-lidded eyes were too sweet to ignore. “Sleep, sweetheart,” I’d murmured to him. And then I’d watched him fall into slumber with a goofy grin on his face.

Summer was a busy time for me on the farm. Thankfully we had extra help including Billy, who’d begged me for a more official job now that he was twelve. We’d sat and had a mock interview in which I asked his interests, strengths, and weaknesses. Both of us were surprised to discover he got most excited when we talked about finances and accounting rather than the physical work outside we’d both assumed he’d prefer.

So I took him to talk to Stan, and we came up with a plan. In the morning he’d do his usual work outside whether it be on the farm or ranch, and in the afternoons when the heat got too much, he’d spend some time checking our invoices against the ledger and bank book. It would be a good way for him to start learning the money side of how an agriculture business worked while also giving our books a good double-check.

He was so excited and proud that when Doc arrived home from work that afternoon, Billy almost burst with it. We’d been sitting on the front porch, and Billy jumped up to race to his dad’s side. “Guess what? Uncle Major hired me to be his accountant!”

Doc’s eyes flashed over to me with his usual crooked grin. He swooped Jackie up into his arms and gave her a loud kiss on the cheek. “Did he? Smart man. What say we celebrate your promotion with dinner out at Dairy Queen? I know Jackie here doesn’t much like ice cream, but the rest of us—”

“Daddyyyyyy!” Jackie cried. “I do, I do wike it.”

“What do you say, Major? Dinner out as a family?”

I could see the happiness and hope in his eyes, and I wanted so much for it to be real—for him to get the happy ever after he wanted and deserved.

But he’d never been gay in public before, and the world wasn’t going to take kindly to two men raising kids together in our small town.

I nodded. “Should I tell Stan and Lois?”

“No, I called and told them we were taking the kids out to give them a night to themselves. I thought maybe we’d go see the new Benji movie afterward. The girls have been asking.”

Billy piped up asking if we could go see a deep-sea treasure-hunting movie instead, but he knew there was no way the girls could go to that one.

“Uncle Major and I could go. You and the girls could see the kids’ movie,” he said.

“Uncle Major wants to see Benji,” I corrected. “But I’ll share a Coke and popcorn with you. How about that?”

He grinned, almost the same as Doc. “Yeah, okay. And I can sit next to you? I mean, I’ll have to for us to share.”

I messed up his hair. “Of course. But I want Jackie on my other side so I’ll have someone’s hand to hold in case it gets scary.”

Jackie giggled and held her arms out for me. I took her from Doc and propped her on my hip. She was getting so big.
