It would be huge to work here.
Avery walks me through the orchard toward the end of the day. “So what do you think?”
I nod as I look around. “This place is amazing.”
She smiles proudly at me. “Thank you. I like to think so, and it means a lot that you would say that. I know you’ve seen a lot of orchards and farms, so it’s great we’ve managed to catch your eye.”
I cross my arms over my chest. “It’s great. Everything seems to run smoothly, and your expansion efforts are amazing. I’m really impressed with the whole thing.”
She nods. “Well, if you have the time, I have one more thing I’d like to show you.”
Since the moment I got here, I’ve been ready to get back to The Wild Peach. I have to keep telling myself that Asher said I needed to do this and our relationship was temporary. I force a smile to my face. “Sure. I got time.”
At that moment, someone pulls up with a side-by-side vehicle, and Avery points to it. “Here’s our ride now.”
Even the side-by-side is huge. Avery gestures for me to get in the back seat, and she follows behind me. When we get to one end of the orchard, there’s a house off to the side with a big front porch. The driver stops in front of it, and Avery and I get out. She walks up to the house and opens the front door. “This is the house for the orchard manager.”
My mouth drops. “This is for—”
She excitedly claps her hands together. “You… well, if you take the position. Come on, I’ll show you around.”
She walks with me into the house, and it’s an open floor plan. It has a large island between the kitchen and the living room. There is huge stone fireplace and bookshelves from floor to ceiling.
When she takes me through the rest of the house, she shows me the huge bathroom with a jacuzzi tub, the walk-in closet, and the bedroom with a sitting area attached. Everything is beautiful from the hardwood floors to the crown molding and nine-foot ceilings. All I can do is look around at everything with my mouth hanging open. I stammer, “This is beautiful.”
Avery nods in agreement. “Thank you. I managed the remodel and decorations myself.”
“Well, it really is something.”
As we walk back into the main area, she gestures to the table.
I sit down, and she sits across from me. “The position comes with a salary, insurance, bonus on harvesting increases and a percentage of the sales in the winery, plus a yearly paid vacation.”
She gestures to the house. “It comes with the house too, and all expenses, of course. You get meals in the dining hall and well, I think that’s all of it. I have a hiring packet back at my office, and it has all of the information in it. But I thought we could sit down and talk about things. Do you have any questions about today?”
I’m drawing a blank because they’ve been pretty thorough with their tour and interview today. “No, I think you’ve covered everything.”
She puts both her hands on the table in front of her. “Okay, so this is where I officially offer you the job. I want you to know that we’ve scoured applications and we know that you are the most perfect candidate for the position. So… Ms. Madelyn Weston, would you be interested in the position of orchard manager for Evers Orchards?”
The blood starts to race through my veins, and I know I need to give them an answer. “Do you think I can walk around the orchard for a minute and think about it?”
She seems taken aback, and I can’t say I blame her. I’m sure she’s used to people saying yes on the spot. But she covers up her surprise quickly. “Yes, absolutely. We want you to be sure.” She stands up. “How about if I go back to the office and grab a few things and I’ll be back here in around thirty minutes. Would that be okay?”
I nod my head. “Yeah, that would be perfect.”
We walk outside together, and I watch Avery and her driver take off down the lane. I walk through the orchard and can see all the reasons why I should say yes. Working here and having it on my resume will open any and every door for me. I’ll gain experience and learn how to expand what I already know about agriculture.
But even knowing all that, I also think about Asher and The Wild Peach. From the moment I first met him, I knew there was something about him. Even though I knew he was grumpy and set in his ways, I wanted to hug him. I knew there was more to him than just his grumpy exterior. I think about the last few days and yeah, the sex is good, but there’s more to it. The way he cares for me is like nothing I’ve felt before.
