“Move, Maxim.”

“Your wish is my command.”

He started slowly. But soon, his movements grew harder. Faster. It was almost too much. Too overwhelming. She could feel herself reaching for that peak but was worried she wouldn’t get there.

“Just relax, baby. Let me do the work. You just lie back and let me take care of you.”

Lord. This man.

He was the best thing to ever happen to her. And she wasn’t ever letting go. So she relaxed and let him take her there. And when her orgasm washed over her, it was consuming and delicious. But it was even better when he joined her, thrusting deep, a shout of satisfaction coming from his mouth.

She latched onto him, holding onto him tight.

Not ever wanting to let go.

He must have felt the same because he rolled them over, so she was lying on top of him and his arms were tight bands around her.

She nuzzled into his chest. “I don’t want to move.”

“I don’t want you to move.”

She found the energy to lean up on her arms so she could look down at him. “I just have to tell you that you’re the best thing that ever happened to me.”

“That’s good to hear, baby. Because I feel exactly the same way about you.”

She was sitting on Maxim’s lap in the living room a few nights later when Regent stormed into the room.

She’d tried to sit on the sofa, but Maxim had other ideas, as he often did.

And she was in his lap.

But then again, Gracen was sitting in Victor’s lap on the other sofa.

So she didn’t feel entirely out of place.

“You’re just in time, bro,” Maxim said, turning up the news. For some reason, he’d insisted that she come watch the news with him. She wasn’t sure why.

She stared at the familiar building on the screen as the news reporter started speaking. What was going on?

“Several members of the notorious Dark Vipers gang have been arrested after a large batch of the new drug, Mixology, was found in this building. Look! Several of them are being escorted out now.”

She sucked in a breath as she spotted Hugh first, his gaze on his feet, his arms locked behind him as an officer led him to a police car. Then, Benny. He was glaring at everyone, his mouth moving as he no doubt spat crap at everyone. Last, there was her father. He looked shrunken. One side of his face was bruised and he shuffled along as though in pain.

She glanced at Maxim, then to Victor, then Regent. She knew where those drugs had come from.

“You all did this? For me?”

“Course we did,” Maxim said.

“You’re family,” Victor added.

“It wasn’t that difficult,” Regent added.

Actually, she bet it’d been very difficult. But they had done it. For her. Just like they’d taken care of Gretchen, Bart and the other two guys who had beaten Maxim up. Regent’s men had found one standing watch outside the apartment building that day. While the other guy had been recovering from his stab wound in Gretchen’s apartment.

They’d left Gretchen’s body in her apartment. Along with a lot of evidence that indicated she’d been using her father’s business to import and sell drugs.

“Thank you,” she whispered as Maxim hugged her tight.

“You’re welcome, baby. I’m always going to take care of you.”

She knew he would.

Regent reached for the remote, turning the television off before he turned to hold out a white envelope that she’d left on his desk. “What is this?”

Uh-oh.

Maxim tensed under her. “Baby?”

“That’s for you,” she told Regent.

“And why would you give me five hundred dollars?”

“Well, it’s all I can afford right now. But I’m going to start looking into new jobs so I can pay my way while I’m here. I’m sure it takes a lot to run a place like this, and I’ve been eating your food and using the utilities, so I . . . thought . . . I . . .”

“Oh shit,” Victor muttered. “Time for us to leave.” He picked Gracen up and walked out with her in his arms.

“You gave Regent money?” Maxim asked in a strangled voice.

“Uh, yes. I don’t know why the two of you don’t seem too happy, but I should pay my way. Plus, I know that you gave Eva money to leave town.” And she’d left a few days after her run-in with Gretchen. Aston felt bad about that, about Eva losing Dan, about everything she’d gone through.

Regent pointed at her, opened his mouth, then he closed it. “See to this, Maxim.”

He stormed out, the envelope landing on the sofa beside her.

“He didn’t take the money,” she said.

“Nope.”

“I get the feeling he’s a bit upset.”

“Yep.”

“Because I tried to pay my way?” she asked.

“Yep.”

“But why?” she asked.

“You’re one of us now, baby. That means that I look after you. It means my brothers do too. That means you do not pay your way. It means you do not worry about getting money to pay your way. Understand?”
