“By whom?”
I’m anticipating for his head to nudge to the left, so you can picture my surprise when he gestures it to my sister.
“Why would Sofia request that?”
Before Alek can answer me, we’re interrupted by the last man I want to exchange words with. “Was that what I believe it was?” While stuffing his hands into his pockets and rocking on his heels, Kirill strays his eyes to the door Katie ran through. “Has she bled this month?”
“No,” Alek answers on my behalf when I can’t get my clenched jaw to unloosen.
Kirill acknowledges Alek’s answer but keeps his focus on me. “Have we tested?”
“No.” My reply is short and abrupt. “I’ll have the doctors do the necessary tests on Monday.”
“Do it today.” He tries to hide his smirk. He fails.
“I’ll send someone—”
“You do it today.” As his eyes connect with my sister across the room, he murmurs, “And bring the results directly to me.”
He isn’t hiding his wish to have a child with another woman from Sofia.
He’s rubbing it in her face.
“I’ll do it now.” My comment shifts his focus from Sofia to me, which gives her the chance to make a quick getaway.
“Good.” After a final stare, he dips his chin in farewell, then joins the hierarchy we’re gathered for at the head of the table. Mafia royalty is in town, so Kirill will be on his best behavior.
The knowledge makes my stomps less obvious when I exit the dining room and enter the industrial refrigerator at the side of the kitchen. This one doesn’t stock food. It is where Kirill keeps his vials of sperm for his virginal brides and the supplies needed for pregnant women.
Over the past two years, we’ve had brides last between one day and two months. Katie is the longest recruit, and it has also taken her the longest to get pregnant. That could have more to do with the fact I’m not pumping her food with fertility drugs than a lack of fertility.
After grabbing an early pregnancy test off the top shelf, I head to Katie’s room. Guards still mingle, but there are nowhere near as many today as there usually are.
Upon entrance, I hear water running. Katie doesn’t usually shower in the middle of the day, but with the pungent smell of vomit mingling in the air, a changeup is understandable.
I prop my shoulder onto the doorjamb, stuff the pregnancy test under my arm, then rake my eyes down her body. She’s gained at least twenty pounds since arriving on the compound but barely any of that weight gathered in her midsection. Her stomach is smooth and flat, giving no shelter to the visual of her bare pussy.
She’s continued to shave every day, and I’d be a liar if I said at one stage I didn’t believe she was doing that for me. We’ve discussed many things the past few months while she’s lying in bed with his sperm inside her, and my preference for a bare snatch was at the top of my conversation pieces.
Katie’s was her wish for hideous curtains.
When I detect I’m being watched while dragging my teeth over my lower lip, I raise my eyes from Katie’s glistening pussy to her face. Her budded nipples announce she’s aware of what caught my attention, but she shifts her focus in a direction I never anticipated.
Her jealousy.
“Who was she?”
I act ignorant. “She?”
“The woman at the table.” The quickest furl of her top lip inches mine higher. “The redhead sitting on your lap.”
“Who she is, is none of your business.”
She has nothing to conceal herself with. The glass is spotlessly clean, and the water removed the suds she was coating herself with when I arrived, but she tries to act like her shield is the hardest it’s ever been. “She just doesn’t seem like your type.” She steps out of the shower and curls a towel around herself before spinning to face me. “She was scared.”
“And why does that matter to you?”
I hide my shock well when she replies, “Because you don’t like them scared.”
“Says you.” My angry tone doesn’t shake her knees in the slightest. They remain as sturdy as my prissy attitude until she spots the pregnancy test.
“Is that why you’re mad at me?” I laugh at her insinuation I like her enough to be mad. It snaps her eyes to mine and doubles their wetness. “Nothing I said last night was untrue.”
“There is a cup in the box you need to pee in.”
When I toss the test into her chest, she catches but ignores it. “I went too far because I was scared, but that doesn’t make anything I said untrue.”
“You need to uncap the test and dip it into the urine. The results should come up in a minute or two.”
“Why are you ignoring me?”
I respond more to the anger in her tone than her worry. “Because you’re not here for me! You’re here for this.” I thrust my hand at the test. “And for him.”
