“What did he say?”

“Told the officer to leave you out of this. To keep your name, and I quote, out of his fucking mouth or he would rip out his tongue, tie it in a knot and use it as fish bait, then break him half. And he meant it, Porsche. Every word of it. There’s no doubt in my mind. The intensity in that man’s eyes was terrifying.”

She lowered her gaze.

“That’s all the more reason why I need clearance to speak to him. Let me help. Let me talk to him and—”

“You’re no closer to finding out what happened with this guy than when you first started! He thinks he has us by the balls because of you. You lost track of what was most important.”

“You can’t be for real. I’m the one who found Clark’s body. I’m the one who was able to narrow your suspect list down! You originally had considered a guy who was bent over like a fucking pretzel, suffering with debilitating medical issues, yet deemed being capable of carrying these crimes out. How ridiculous! I am the one who found more evidence about Ethan having an issue with women, and talked to the Medical Examiner and Forensics! It was me who did the extensive additional interviews, and got more people talking. It was me who told the public to please give y’all a chance, and to try and keep calm!”

“It was all self-serving. I see that now. Where’s the progress?”

“I don’t get paid enough for there to be any self-serving reward involved, and last I saw, none of you fuckers have cut me a check, or even offered a damn thank you! I’ve put my life in danger every time I hit these streets. Asking questions. Demanding information.”

“We’ve done that too! That’s what police do! We made an oath!”

“I can’t tell. Every step I have taken helps remove doubt in one direction and increase it in another. That’s called progress! My oath is to God! When you can eliminate something and concentrate on something else, no matter how slow it is, it is progress. Movement! They teach homicide detectives that patience and accuracy is more important than timing. This is a race, but it’s not a sprint! It’s a marathon. Y’all were stagnant. Frozen like the damn Disney movie. You wouldn’t even admit that there was a serial killer, the most basic information! I can spit farther than y’all got on your own without me, and now you want to imply that I didn’t help? Bullshit.”

“We didn’t need your assistance. You’ve been a distraction.”

“Your entire police department is inept, incapable, disorganized, understaffed, and laughable. The dishonorable Chief Lewis has the right man in jail, but for the wrong thing, and now you’ve got the wrong man in jail, for the right thing! Y’all are like a day at the damn circus, only there’s no cool lions and elephants—it’s just a bunch of dumb ass clowns in cop outfits trying to cram into one little ass agenda! You’re an embarrassment to the badge. How’s that for progress?”

“That’s it, Porsche. I don’t want you involved anymore.” She laughed mirthlessly and sucked her teeth. “I even helped you by bringing that information to you that we discussed, and this is what you come up with?! I tried to be understanding, but this is it!”

“You tried to be understanding?! You tried to get me out of town the first minute I stepped foot here! Your entire police department is corrupt, and you almost helped sink the ship by sequestering evidence! An entire file of a dead man went missing! More than one! As if that wasn’t bad enough.”

“And you’ve been having an inappropriate relationship with a murder suspect, which I warned you against. We know now for a fact that that suspect is a damn serial killer, and you are in denial. You may have been hot shit in Boston, but you aren’t hot shit here. Get some help!”

“So, you think I’m crazy because I fucked him? I just want to make sure I understand your accusation before I respond.” Her jaw tightened as she slipped into an angry fit.

“I think you’re crazy because all the evidence points to him, and you’re too infatuated with this evil person to see him for what he truly is! At this point, it’s like trying to convince you that grass is green, but you want to argue that it’s purple.”

“You think I can’t separate fact from fiction, like Nik’s dick is so fucking magical, so incredible, that I am now cock crazy? Wanker-whipped and dick delirious to the point that I can’t see the forest for the trees!”

“Maybe.”

“Wow. Let me tell you something about me, Dakota. I can ride a man until the sun sets, orgasm five times back-to-back, and arrest his ass by midnight like not a damn thing happened. I can kiss you and throw your ass in jail two seconds afterwards, and not give a single fuck! I’ve done it once, and I can do it again!”
