His eyes darken and he pulls me flush against him to give me another kiss, a slower, deeper one that I feel all the way down to my toes. When he breaks the kiss, his face stays inches from mine.
“I love hearing you say I’m yours.”
I wrinkle my nose and smile. “Really?”
“Really.” He kisses me one more time and straightens, shaking his head again as his gaze drops down my body in another slow perusal. “If we don’t leave right now, I might take you back to the room.”
“You’re the one who wants to go out,” I say, smiling at his quick strides to the door.
“Which is why I’m trying to resist temptation.”
I smile and follow behind him. When we reach the kitchen, I spot a beautiful arrangement of sunflowers and smile wider. “You got me flowers.”
“Ella suggested I get you red roses for our first date, since they symbolize passion.”
“I see you took her advice,” I say, laughing as I take my phone out and snap a picture before we walk out.
He holds my hand on the way to the elevator. When we’re inside, I press the button to the lobby and push him against the wall. His eyes are burning with a heat I feel in my core. I wrap my arms around his neck and pull him down to kiss him quickly.
“Thank you for the sunflowers,” I say against his lips. “Seeing them makes me smile.”
“You make me smile,” he says, squeezing my hips and kissing me lightly again.
“I also make you very hard, apparently,” I whisper.
“Always, baby.”
The doors open and I turn to face the newcomers, but keep my back against Finn’s chest as he wraps his arms around me. I smile at the gray-haired man and his cute beagle. When we reach the lobby, we let them get out and Finn adjusts his pants.
He checks me out again and exhales as he grabs my hand. “It’s going to be a long fucking night.”
“You know, the first time you sent me flowers, I figured you only wanted to one-up Tate. I was kind of surprised you didn’t just send me double the roses he gave me or something,” I say, as he holds the door open for me and leads me to his car. “Maybe that was why you sent them, but your note was really sweet.”
“Because I said they remind me of you?” he asks once we’re in the car. He glances over as he starts the car. “They do. They’re bright and always face the sun, like you.”
“Do you think anyone would believe me if I told them how incredibly sweet you are?” I joke, smiling.
He chuckles as he starts driving. “No, because I’m only like this with you.”
My heart skips a beat and I set my hand over his on the gear shift. “Will this be weird for you again?”
He spreads his fingers so mine fall between them. “What?”
“Going to my house. I know it was weird for you last time.”
He glances at me. “It’ll be different now.”
“Because you finally believe me when I say he had nothing to do with this?” I ask. “You do believe me, right?”
“You told me you couldn’t be with me if I didn’t,” he points out.
“Does that mean you lied just to get me to be with you?”
“No, but you were right.” His lips purse. He squeezes my fingers a little. “His story checks out.”
“Checks out?” My brows rise. “You fact-checked me?”
“I don’t trust blindly,” he says, squeezing my fingers when I try to move my hand away. “I’m not talking about you, Joss. You know I’ll take your word over anyone’s.”
“Why?” I ask as we stop at a red light.
“You’re just … you.” He glances at me, his eyes taking in every inch of my face. “You’re different.”
“Different from whom?”
“Everyone I know.” He shifts gears and starts driving again.
“You mean the girls you grew up with?”
“Everyone,” he says and glances at me briefly. “What was your impression of Mallory’s friends from high school?”
I frown. “Elizabeth seemed nice.”
“And the rest?”
“Well, you know how I feel about Gracie.”
“Fuck Gracie.”
That makes me smile.
“What’s her problem anyway?” he asks. “She’s always been a bitch, but she seems more vindictive when it comes to you.”
“Long story short, in junior year, she dated a baseball player from my school who happened to be my first boyfriend,” I add quickly. “She showed up at his birthday party and called him trash in front of everyone, so I went off on her and kicked her out, which I guess no one had ever done.” I pause, biting my lip before I add. “Aaaand Lance made out with me in front of her out of spite.”
Finn scowls. “You could’ve left that part out.”
I laugh. “It’s the whole story.”
“Where is this Lance guy now?” he asks, still scowling.
