That’s why I’d been meditating more and sitting in silence. Many sites and gurus preached about that being the path to enlightenment. In these days and times, enlightenment didn’t sound like a bad idea.

Maybe I should go meditate now.

The idea of being inside my head caused frazzled sensations to creep within me. That very fact symbolized my need to get my mind together. Fix the broken parts that had become cracked and shattered from my marriage.

Instead of sitting out with these snow people and waiting for them to come alive, I should’ve been inside and working on the fire inside of me. Clearing a place for the pile of firewood and searching for fuel—doing the things that made me stronger.

I’d even been pondering the possibility of having Daniel back in my life.

The more I thought about it, the more happiness seemed probable in this messed up world.

However, my fire would have to wait for now.

I couldn’t let Remy and the other snow people go, yet.

Last night, they’d come alive.

Remy had walked in my dreams and made love to me.

For some reason, all of this had happened to me. I had to discover why.

Was it God trying to tell me something? Was it the mojo bag? Was Hoodoo real? Or was this all in my head?

If they don’t move tonight, then I should consider the fact that I may need to talk to a head doctor.

An odd noise sounded behind me. I picked up my flame torch and turned toward the noise. Nothing. The fire crackled. The wind whipped. The trees dropped bits of melting snow onto the ground. My snow people remained in their cells.

A ding came from my left.

This is happening.

A horn blared on my right.

Colorful sparks burst in the air.

I jumped back and screamed.

Beautiful shades of pink exploded around bright greens and glittering purples. More glimmering colors shattered the silent black of the air.

The falling snow disappeared.

Warmth flowed around me. That same heat from the other night swarmed around me.

I pulled my hat off and prepared myself for what I’d been waiting for all night.

I knew I didn’t imagine this. Magic is real.

I checked my watch. The time read a few minutes after ten. When had they appeared before? Did the time of night matter? Didn’t Remy say something about the moon and magic in the air?

Everything had to be considered and researched. Every moment mattered. Life, God, or the Universe was trying to tell me something and my ears were stretched wide open to hurry up with the lesson and get me back to normal again.

A haunting pale blue light glowed around me.

I focused on the jail cells.

Colors fire-worked all around the cells as my snow creatures came alive. Light scorching through there tattered lace of darkness hanging around my land.

Santa yawned and stretched. The mermaids opened their eyes and flicked their tails against the bars. I checked Remy. He hadn’t woken up yet, although silver and gold swirled around his head and muscular arms.

“Eh! What’s going on?” Santa knocked at the bars. “Who did this?”

“I did.”

Santa turned to me. “Who’s there?”

“Me.”

“Who are you?” He directed his gaze all around my yard, never directly focusing on me. “Where are you?”

“Almost in front of you.”

“How can you talk to me?” Santa asked.

Shocked, I stuttered, “H-how can you talk to me?”

“Are you dead?” Santa asked.

“I don’t think so. I feel very much alive.” I rose and walked a few steps his way, still checking to see if Remy had woken up. He remained stiff in his cell.

“You can see me?” Santa asked.

“Yes. You’re Santa.”

“I’m not. I just took this form. It was better than being the guitar or the elves. No one wants to be them.”

Not that it was the most important part of the conversation, but for some reason I wanted to know. “Why not? Why doesn’t anyone want to be one of my elves or guitar?”

“The guitar has too much darkness around it. Like it was made with dead spirits.” Santa moved his fingers around the bar. His eyes glowed red. “I can see you a little more. You’re the one that Remy likes.”

“You know Remy?”

“I know everyone over here.”

“Where is there?”

“We call it the Spirit World.”

“Are you all dead?”

“No, we’re very much alive too. We’ve always been alive. Spirits. Born of bones and earth. Born before continents separated and earthquakes shaped the world you know now. Spirits. Born before God was God and the sky was blue.”

My heart almost stopped. “Really?”

“No.” Santa laughed, falling on the ground and holding his stomach. “I’ve always wanted to be the person to say that. So funny.”

My mouth opened, but no words came out.

Santa continued, “I forgot when I died, but I was driving. I had two sweet things kissing all over me. One blonde. The other redhead. I took my focus off the road. And that was that. I crashed around here.”
