“Are you?”
She opened her mouth and took too long to answer. “No.”
“You don’t sound certain.”
“I’m just hoping he doesn’t come back alive again. I can’t take much more of this.”
“It didn’t seem that way, when I found you.”
“It made sense in the moment, but just like dating a bad guy, once we’re away from each other, nothing ever sits right. I never feel the same unless he’s right in front of me.” She cleared her throat. “Now I’m back to reality. Besides, there’s not much life to have, when you’re in love with ice. Well, not just ice, a spirit. A spirit that should be searching for the light.”
“And what’s the light?”
“I don’t know. He said he would answer me later.”
“Later? I don’t think so.” I rose from the table. “We’re burning those bags, calling your mother, and then going to my cabin.”
“I’m fine right here.”
“Do you want me to pack some clothes or will you be wearing those blankets?”
She leaned back in her chair. “You can’t just come over here and tell me what to do. I’m a grown woman.”
“I don’t have a problem with going up to your bedroom and picking out the panties that I’ll be taking off tonight.”
“I’m a lady.” She stuck her tongue at me. “Just because I gave it up quick to a snowman doesn’t mean I’m going to be opening my legs to you, especially when you’re being controlling.”
“I don’t want you here by yourself tonight.”
And I damn sure don’t want you to see this Remy again.
For several moments, she stared at the window as snow melted.
Was she serious? Could she easily walk away from this whole crazy ice fest or had it changed something about her?
“Come home with me, Faith. Let me take care of you. We’ll grab some clothes and you can take my bedroom for as long as you want. I’m joking about the sex. I want it, but you know I can wait for years. In fact, I’ve waited for years.”
She turned to me. “Why did you wait?”
“Because I love you.”
“It was so long ago, Daniel.”
“Years didn’t wear away at my love. Did that happen for you? Is there no more love in your heart for me?”
“Baby,” she laughed, “after Brett and all of his affairs, I don’t even know what love is.”
“Then let me show you.” I walked over and kneeled in front of her. “Let me show you what love looks like.” I held her hand and rubbed my thumb against hers. “Let me show you that it’s more than physical pleasure. Let me be the man you deserve. Let me show you I’m worthy.”
She curved her lips into a smile. “You always had a beautiful way with words.”
“I want another chance. I’m willing to beg for it.”
She frowned. “Shouldn’t I be the one begging? I’m the piece of shit that. . .broke your heart.”
“Don’t worry. You’ll be begging later.” I captured those lips. So, sweet.
A soft moan left her lips.
Interesting.
And that mouth was everything I’d remembered. I had to keep myself back to not devour her whole.
Take care of her. Do. Not. Try. To make love to her tonight! Patience.
“Come home with me,” I whispered against her lips.
My cock was hard in my jeans. My hands were so very close to pulling those blankets away and showing her what a real man could do, not some magical thing covered in snow.
“Come home with me.”
“But—”
I sucked on that bottom lip. “Come home with me. Let me take care of you.”
“Okay.” She kissed me back. And we remained that way in the kitchen for longer than I’d ever dreamed we would. Our lips slipped along each other’s, tasting and sucking.
After a minute, she pulled away and tears fell from her eyes. “Wait. No.”
“What’s wrong?” I tucked hair behind her ears.
“I don’t deserve you and I damn sure don’t deserve your understanding of everything I just said. You’re too good of a man.”
“Your welcome.”
“What?”
“You’re telling me thank you for being so awesome.”
“No, I’m—”
My mouth stopped her words. I’d just gotten a sample of those lips and I would not pause from the feast of her. She’d have to doubt our love on her own time. For now, I hoped to catch up on all these years. And if that damn snowman brought his icy ass around, I would ruin him, chop his body into tiny bits, melt them into water, pour the liquid into separate shipping buckets, and mail him to Arizona.
She was mine.
I’d worked hard.
Addie Mae had clearly given us her blessing.
How could I not win?

ight came.
While Faith packed, I stood by the fire place.
Earlier, she’d confessed more about Remy. Apparently, he lived on the property and had killed himself. I didn’t even like thinking of everything she’d said. If what happened was real, then the world as I knew it was even more of a mystery than before.
