The choice was an easy one. “Come and stay at my house. I’ve got a couch you can crash on. At least until we can give a proper search around here when the sun’s back up.”

He didn’t hesitate in accepting. “Sounds like a plan to me.”

“All right, good.” I licked my lips, chewing on the bottom one, wondering if keeping Matt safe was my only motive or if there was a subconscious pull toward the possibility of something else…

Ah fuck, who was I kidding? Nothing was subconscious about the way my cock twitched in my pants at the idea of Matt coming over and picking up where we left off in my office.

“Let’s go,” I said, sliding a hand in my pocket so I could try to subtly adjust my growing subconscious.

The car ride to my house was a short one, but not short enough for Matt to bring up an old inside joke we used to have.

“Balloon sex” was all he said, and I immediately started to crack up.

“Is better than safe sex,” I replied when I got the laughter to subside. “I still can’t believe you tried to use a balloon as a condom.”

“Jace, it’s not my fault I went to an abstinence-obsessed school and never had the good ol’ wrapped-banana demonstration. I figured it would be the same thing, so when I was alone with a couple of birthday balloons, I decided to give it a shot… It clearly wasn’t. Thank God it was just me being a horny teen by myself.”

“How’d you even get it on? Those holes are tiny, and you’re—”

“Not?” he said, smirking. A warm pulse shot down my spine and settled between my legs. “I cut the tight part off and then stretched the rest. Why, are you thinking of trying it?”

“Yeah, I’ve always been interested in the natural evolution after balloon animals—balloon dicks.”

“It’s what Darwin would have wanted.”

“Obviously.”

And then we both started to laugh, the belly-shaking kind of laugh that I hadn’t felt in years. It would be a common occurrence whenever we were together. It had become a release of pure endorphins, hearing Matt laugh and joining along with him. I wiped at a rogue tear creeping down my cheek and took a breath, feeling the burn in my stomach from all the laughter as I drove us down the quiet street I called home. It was tucked between a park and a rec center, each of the houses painted in a different shade of blue or green. We pulled up to mine, a navy blue farmhouse-style home with white-and-black trim, copper highlights popping from the hardware. A few rosebushes bordered the tiny front porch, their pink petals curling and falling with the change of season.

My house was much cozier than the mayor’s mansion Matt had been staying at. The door opened directly into the living room, a pair of my jeans thrown onto the back of my maroon love seat. I grabbed those (and the pair of abandoned socks on the floor) and tossed them into my bedroom.

“Make yourself at home,” I said to Matt as he took off the backpack he’d brought with him, setting it down next to the couch.

“Your place is beautiful. I didn’t realize you had such an eye for design. How are you so good at everything you do?”

If I wasn’t in the kitchen, Matt might have seen a rosy pink spread across my cheeks.

“Red or white?” I asked, ignoring his very generous statement.

“I’ll do white.”

I poured us both some chardonnay and came back to the living room with the glasses, finding Matt sitting on the couch with his arms thrown back and legs spread wide. He leaned forward and took the glass, giving me a thank-you and raising it up for a cheers.

“To us,” he said.

“To us,” I repeated, the words tasting sweeter on my tongue than the wine did.

We drank and talked, the time slowly ticking by as our old bonds began to form again. Memories floated up to the surface, making me wear an effortless smile as we reminisced. Nothing we talked about had to do with work. That would come tomorrow, when the new day began and the intensity of tonight was put behind us.

For now, all I wanted to do was relax and live in a fantasy I’d denied myself for years.

Me and Matt. Together. Sexually, spiritually, emotionally. Everything linked, working in unison.

I sat back on the couch, and Matt’s arm came to fall around my shoulders. I inhaled, taking in some of the woodsy cologne that drifted off Matt’s neck. Something coiled inside me—a primal need, a sudden urge. I couldn’t ignore the pulsing heat between my legs.

The tension was beyond thick. It was palpable. A physical force that pushed out from my chest, rushing down my back, coursing between my legs. An undeniable surge of heat filled me. I became hyperaware of my leg resting against Matt’s, and aware that higher up my leg, my dick twitched, growing harder the more I thought about how close Matt and I were sitting.
