They might have already gone on to the club by now to beat the queues on the door.

Shawn didn’t want to tell Jude he was coming. He wanted to surprise him, for better or worse. Instead he texted Jez before leaving the house.

Where are u?

At Troopers. Why?

Shawn didn’t reply again. He hoped that exchange wouldn’t be remarkable enough for Jez to mention it to anyone else. He put his phone in his pocket.

What the fuck am I doing?

He had no plan, no speech prepared—he was going to have to wing it. All he could hope was that he got there before Jude hooked up with Sid. So he put on his jacket, squared his shoulders, and set off into the night.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Jude stood at the edge of the dance floor, knocking back his pint. He’d stuck to shots in the pub because he didn’t like being too full of beer when dancing, but now he was thirsty and the lager was refreshing. With the alcohol coursing through his veins and the thump of the bass vibrating in his bones, he felt exhilarated and ready to party.

Though still relatively early, the club had filled up fast. The doors had opened at ten, and the promise of low-priced drinks for the first hour had tempted people away from the pubs. A queue had been forming when they arrived at half past, and it took them a while to get in. At this rate the bouncers would be turning people away later.

Sid was already dancing, along with Jez and a few of the others they’d met in the pub.

Mac came back from the toilet, and put a hand on Jude’s shoulder. “You coming to dance?”

“Yeah, in a minute.” Jude lifted his pint. “Unless you want to help me with this?” There were no tables free. If he put his drink down, he’d probably never see it again.

Mac took it with a grin and downed most of what was left. “There. I’ll buy you another one later.”

Jude rolled his eyes. “Cheers.”

When they approached the dance floor, a group parted to let them in. Jez immediately latched onto Mac, putting his arms around his neck and grinding on his thigh. They smiled at each other, gazes locked, and Jude felt a pang of envy for what they had together.

Just then, a hand on his shoulder reminded him that he could get laid tonight if that was what he wanted. Sid had been flirting with him by text earlier, and Jude had flirted back. Neither had made any promises, but Jude knew Sid was there for the taking.

Sid pulled him around and started to dance with him. His eyes were hot and interested. He ran his hands up Jude’s stomach and chest, laughing as he read the words that had been hidden by Jude’s jacket in the pub.

“Nice T-shirt.” He grinned, then leaned in close so Jude could hear him clearly over the music. “And it makes sense. I wouldn’t want to waste time on a virgin when I know what a good fuck you are.”

Jude chuckled, gripping Sid’s hips and tugging him closer. “You’re not so bad yourself.”

Maybe he should just go along with this. He and Sid had always been good together. It would be easy, familiar—and not in a bad way. Sid might help to erase the thoughts of Shawn that wouldn’t leave his head.

He let Sid cup his jaw and guide him into a kiss. It was a good kiss, confident and full of promise.

But it jarred. Everything felt wrong. Longing for Shawn was like a spike twisting in his chest. He wasn’t going to be able to fuck Shawn out of his system tonight, and he didn’t think it was fair on Sid to try while he felt like this. He pulled away gently and shook his head.

“No?” Sid raised his eyebrows, regret written on his features.

“Sorry,” Jude said. Then he spoke into Sid’s ear. “It’s nothing personal. But I’m hung up on someone else.”

“Aw, baby. And he doesn’t want you?”

Jude shrugged. “I think he does. But it’s complicated.”

“Well, it’s his loss.” Sid drew away and smiled.

Jude smiled back. Sid was a good guy.

They carried on dancing close together. Their bodies moved in sync and it was fun and flirty and a little bit sexy. But now they’d established it wasn’t going anywhere, Jude was free to enjoy it without worrying he was leading Sid on.

Jude spotted a guy watching them over Sid’s shoulder, his attention particularly focused on Sid’s arse as he moved sinuously to the rhythm. The guy, who was wearing a white T-shirt that showed off his Mediterranean colouring, caught Jude’s eye and raised his brows.

Jude spun Sid around so his back was pressed against Jude’s front. “You’ve got an admirer,” he said into Sid’s ear.

Sid shivered at Jude’s breath and ground his arse against Jude’s dick, which was half-hard—he might have Shawn on the brain, but he was twenty years old and not made of stone. Sid turned his head and asked, “Where?”
