“Hey, it means they didn’t just blow sky high. Good. We're pulling out. If we've got her, she comes with us. If not, we're not accomplishing anything here.” King barks a few commands to the closest guys, and they start spreading the word.

Badass makes his way over. “Find her yet?”

“No, she was with you last we saw.” Wraith says grimly. “What the fuck happened?”

“The whole fucking place blew up, that’s what happened. I asked around and a lady saw a girl that matches Kaylee get led away by an older man. He seemed to be helping her. We tried looking for them, but no luck.” As Badass finishes, Eagle-eye arrives with Hero, looking all of us over with his one-eyed glare.

Tank scratches his head. “Who the fuck would she go with? Where was this? Take us there!”

Hero leads the way. “We don’t known for sure, because witnesses are fucking useless, but over this way.”

“Kaylee!” Tank yells, and then Wraith and I join in. We’re not gonna take the fucking chance that she’s not having cocoa in someone’s apartment while they’re waiting for the fire department.

We turn down a couple of alleys and side streets, looking for any sign, but it’s not until I spot something on the ground that the sinking feeling deep in my gut drops all way to my fucking feet.

I pick it up. It’s one of Kaylee’s gloves. “She was here. Someone fucking grabbed her.” Fuck, it could be significant, or it could mean nothing at all. My gut tells me it means something, though.

Badass waves at us, holding his phone. “Eagle-eye says we need to go. There’s more cops coming. We gotta get outta here. Stay and be killed.”

Leaving is the last thing I want to do, but there’s no way to help her if we’re dead or behind bars. Fuck. “Fine. Coming.”

On the ride back, I can't shake the feeling that we've fucking abandoned Kaylee. What the fuck happened? And who was the man she was seen with? There's a big fucking ball of spiky worry in my gut, and it's not gonna go away until I've got Kaylee back in my arms.

And I'm willing to do some pretty fucked up shit to make that happen.

KAYLEE

The ropes chew into my wrists, and everything's black. This time, being blindfolded isn't nearly as much fun. In fact, it's terrifying.

I'm in a car, a limo. I saw that much before they put the blindfold on and shoved me in here. Anderson and Harris are sitting on either side of me, with our backs to the driver. I have no idea which one's which though. They haven't said anything since I was shoved in here, and that just makes them even more eerie.

“You've caused us a lot of trouble, Ms. Thompson,” says Hawthorne from the seat across from us. As soon as we met up with the others, he dropped the fatherly persona like a snake shedding its skin. “But it'll all be worth it in the end. The Screaming Eagles and the Giordanos can wipe each other out, and whatever's left, we'll mop up easily. It’s too bad, really. The Mafia used to be reasonable to work with, but those damn hooligans ruined everything.”

I need to think of a plan, but I feel numb. Nitro, Tank and Wraith are probably dead, and there’s a good chance I’ll join them if I don’t cooperate. The only thing keeping me going is knowing that the guys would want the club to survive, and there are so many people I met in the Screaming Eagles that I don’t want to see hurt.

If I can keep him talking, maybe I'll learn something I can use.

“How did you know about Emily?”

“What do you mean?” He sounds amused, like he's pulled one over on me. I guess he did.

“Pretending to be her dad.”

“Oh, baby girl. I wasn't pretending. I am Emily's father. And Miriam's ex-husband. Eagle-eye and I, we have a history. We go way back. The only chance I took was hoping nobody would have bothered telling someone like you enough details to make you doubt me.” He chuckles.

God, I hope he never calls me baby girl again. The chills that rush down my back freeze my spine from the inside. He's actually Emily's dad? I just bet he and Eagle-eye have history. “Someone like me?”

“Please. Harris has told me all about you. You’re a nothing. A pawn with a cunt. You were given the chance to do the right thing and instead you decided to become a slut for those animals.”

“I’d rather be one of their sluts than lie for you bastards anyday,” I spit.

Ok, maybe that was a bit much.

But he doesn't seem bothered. He's in charge, so I guess he doesn't care how mouthy I get. “You're all sluts. Whores who throw yourselves on your backs, spread your legs and wait for a filthy biker to fall in. You, Emily, Miriam, and any other woman in that shithole. This city won't be clean until we've gotten rid of every single one of them. Of you.”
