“How important is she?” asks Nicholas, his gun pointed right in my direction.

That’s not the kind of question that gives a girl warm fuzzies.

So I'm relieved when Wraith shakes his head. “If you make a single move that causes Kaylee to be hurt, you won't make it back to report to Arturo. Just so that's fucking clear.”

But if they don't, then Harris will get away with me, and then what? I go limp, making myself as heavy as possible, hoping that he won't shoot me. If he does, he'll lose the only leverage that he has. So what can I do except resist? I try to kick Harris's leg.

“Kaylee,” snaps Nitro.

“Stop it, you little bitch,” Harris growls and lifts me right off my feet. His grip is cutting off my air, and I grab his arm, digging my nails in to try to make him let go. I hear him hiss, but he doesn't let up. “You're coming with me, whether you want to or not, so stop your fucking wiggling.” All I can do is fight for precious oxygen as he drags me.

The boat rocks as he pulls me aboard. The water on either side of us is black, only broken up by a hint of white froth as the cold wind cuts over the lake. The guys follow, keeping their distance and their guns trained on Harris and Hawthorne, but I know none of them are going to shoot. And of course I don't want them to, but will that save me? I really don't know. The farther away from them that he takes me, the more in danger I am.

“Untie the boat,” Harris orders Hawthorne, and he hops to it. “And you! If you shoot him, your little bitch is going down too.”

Hawthorne loosens the rope and jumps aboard, giving the dock a push with his foot. Harris turns the key, and the motor starts up. The boat's rocking intensifies as we float away. And still, Harris has his iron grip around my throat. I'm starting to get dizzy.

“There's a guest dock on the far side of the lake,” says Hawthorne as he pulls a phone out of his pocket. “Get us there, and I'll have someone pick us up.”

The boat roars as Harris presses the throttle, and only Harris holding me keeps me from falling when it lurches forwards.

When we're finally out of shooting range, I'm released so suddenly that I topple right into the back of the boat. I hit the plastic seats with a grunt, then spend a few moments getting my breath back. My throat aches, almost as much as my heart does.

And behind us, the dock falls farther and farther away, along with Nicholas, Eagle-eye and the three best men on the planet.

“Fuck!” Tank screams, aiming his gun after the boat, but we all know we're not shooting. Not if we might hit Kaylee.

Wraith snarls. “If they get away, we're never seeing Kaylee again.”

My gaze falls to the two jet skis bobbing in the water next to the dock. “How different can they be from riding a motorcycle anyway?” I point.

Tank's eyes light up. “We're about to fucking find out.” He's the first one there, dropping onto the closest one. It dips low under his weight. It starts up with a rumble that sounds awfully tinny when you're used to a proper engine between your legs, but as long as it fucking gets us there, I don't give a fuck.

“Guess we share?” Wraith asks as he jumps onto the other one. I drop onto it behind him and unhook the mooring rope.

“Nicholas and I will drive around,” says Eagle-eye. “If I’ve got it figured out right, there's only one place on the other side. We'll meet you there.”

Tank shoots off first, the roar growing more respectable as he twists the throttle, but we're not far behind. Wraith leans forwards and guns this thing for all it's worth. It wobbles hard on the waves, but so far so good.

Still, fast as we're going, Harris and Hawthorne have a good head start and the benefit of someone who knows the fucking lake. If either of those fucks hurt Kaylee, I swear they're not going to survive the night. They're already dead men walking.

The jet ski bounces in the water, making me slam my teeth together. Who the fuck does this for fun?

The boat starts as a vague shadow in the darkness, but as the moon rises and my eyes adjust, it becomes easier to make out. Have they noticed us yet? It doesn’t seem like it, because they're keeping a straight line for some lights on the other side of the lake. I'm guessing that's where they've got a way out. Eagle-eye's not afraid of riding fast, but the lake's big. Hopefully, he's able to meet us on the other side in time.
