But as he opens the door and gently ushers me into his car, his hand never leaving mine, his gaze burning with pure desire and need, my gut tightens with the same instinctual pull. I’m safe with Dawson.

After he slides into the driver’s seat and starts the engine, his hand is on my thigh and squeezes, pulsing with need as he maneuvers down the street. The tension is palpable, and memories of all the moments and heated exchanges we’ve shared flood my mind.

And now, what can be.

As soon as he pulls up to my building, we both get out of the car and he walks around to me. My feet freeze on the spot as I look at him. “I work for you,” I remind him. More so as a warning because if we actually do this, there is no going back.

“I know.”

“I might bite you again,” I add, trying to lighten the mood.

“I hope you do.” He smirks, which in turn causes me to smile back at him.

I hear my name, and when I turn around, Kit is standing there. He stares at me, his hands in his pockets.

“Kit.” I say his name, and he looks from me to Dawson and back again. “This is a surprise.” I haven’t seen him since I lost my virginity. In fact, we’ve only exchanged a few messages since then as I’ve tried to sort out all my thoughts and emotions.

“Yeah, well, I know you’ve been dealing with some stuff this week, so I wanted to check on you. Is this your brother?” he asks, motioning to Dawson.

“Her boss, actually,” Dawson answers, and there’s a dark undertone in his words.

Kit doesn’t realize it, but he takes a step back and looks between us again.

“Okay. Well, can we talk?” he asks, and I turn to Dawson.

I’m stunned.

How is this for shit timing?

But I waver on my decision. Is this like divine intervention? Something telling me maybe Dawson is a bad decision? Kit is the embodiment of a nice guy, something new and normal. And isn’t that what I wanted only a week ago? I swallow. At every moment with Dawson, there’s always been something to stop us. Surely, that’s a sign. My mind jumbles with confusion, and I realize then that Kit has been watching me silently this whole time.

“Dawson, I’m sorry. I have to cancel our plans. Can we talk later?” I ask.

A cruel expression crosses over his features. And for a moment, I think he’s going to say something. My heart races just thinking about it. I don’t want to hurt Kit. I don’t want a showdown in front of my apartment building.

Eventually, Dawson nods, but I can tell he is not pleased with me.

I feel shitty. I wanted to take Dawson to my apartment, but I don’t want to turn Kit away.

Fuck. What was I thinking?

“Goodnight, Honey,” Dawson says before he gets in his car and drives off.

Right now, I can’t help but think maybe I didn’t make the right decision. But how could I blow off Kit so obviously like that?

“He seems like more than a boss,” Kit comments.

Fucking tell me about it.

“He’s just my boss. We had to go over some things,” I tell him awkwardly, shoving my hands into my pockets. Because, quite honestly, I don’t want to invite Kit up to my apartment just yet. I thought I did all of this so I could get closer to him, and now I feel guilty and awkward.

“So, what brings you here? Do you want to go for a coffee or something?” I ask, pointing in the direction of the café across the road.

He shakes his head. “Look, you’re great and everything, and this has been amazing, but to be honest, I need to…” I stand there staring at him. Is he breaking up with me? “Well, I know who you are,” he adds awkwardly.

“You know who I am?” I ask, confused.

He leans in and whispers, a little unsure, “I saw you, well, the photos. You should have told me you were a virgin.” My body freezes at his words, and I feel the color drain from my face.

How could he know that?

How does he know about the virgin auctions?

“Honey,” he says and leans away. “Say something. I would have helped you if it was money you needed.”

“I…” What? Kit is a normal type of guy, isn’t he? Sure, he works for a well-known accounting firm, but this society is on a whole different level.

“I have money, and I would have paid you.” He licks his lips.

“Excuse me?”

He smiles coyly. “You know, virgins are quite rare.”

“Rare?” I ask, and I feel my blood boil despite the cold slap of confusion.

Kit was meant to be a Mr. Nice guy.

Kit was meant to be normal.

“Yes. We could have made it special.”

The guilt and uncertainty wash away. Was Kit propositioning me now because I’d been a virgin?
