I shivered, trying to focus on the matter at hand.

“What do we do?”

“I was going to stop for the night to get a little bit of rest,” he said, giving me a look that said he was thinking more of the bed than actually sleeping in it. “Instead we keep going.”

“Can you do that?” I asked, wishing I had learned to drive. That was next on my list. If we made it.

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Days if I have to. A week, tops.”

“You’re joking,” I said, staring at him aghast. What would going without sleep for that long do to a person?

“We trained for this in the military. I ran missions where we didn’t sleep for three or four days at a stretch. That was life or death.”

He looked at me briefly then back at the road.

“And the stakes now are even higher.”

“They are? Aren’t they the same?”

“No. Not even close.”

“Why not?”

“Because of you. You are… highly motivating. I want to keep both of us alive, for as long as humanly possible.”

I bit my lip, not sure what to say to that. My heart thudded in my chest. A feeling of warmth and safety spread through my body. It felt coming home.

It was unlike anything I had ever felt. I felt safe. Protected. Cherished. Under the circumstances in the middle of a high speed car chase, it was unexpected to say the least.

“Can we lose them?”

“Yes.”

“I trust you,” I said, and leaned back in my seat. I wasn’t relaxed exactly. But I wasn’t afraid either.

I knew in my heart that Vice would get us out of this situation. I knew everything would be fine.

He would save me. He would save us both.

CHAPTER THIRTY

Vice

“Be a doll and hold the phone up for me?”

Anastasia was quick to obey my order, holding my phone up so I could video chat with Trace and Cain.

“That’s good. Hold it steady on the dash so we can both see,” she did as I asked. “Thank you,” I added. She was holding up well. I was fucking proud of her.

Her arm brushed mine and the electricity between us jumped. I shot her a look and saw that she felt it too. I couldn’t help but let my eyes drag over her body. I groaned when I noticed that her nipples were hard, poking deliciously through her thin cotton shirt.

I inhaled sharply as my body hardened in response, wanting to pull over, haul her into my lap and devour her. I would kiss her first, as my hands unloosened her buttons, then her bra, freeing her breasts to my hands and mouth. I would taste her, teasing her nipples with my lips and fingers, until she was writhing.

But right now, I couldn’t do any of that. If I pulled over, her father’s henchmen would catch us. And if they caught us, somebody would die.

Hopefully them. I was no slouch in the fighting and shooting department. But it could be any of us. It wasn’t worth the risk.

So I drove. Even though every instinct in my body was urging me to pull over and have my way with her. I knew she would not fight me.

We were both ravenous for each other. The chemistry between us was like a drug. It was a drug, according to science. Dopamine and serotonin and some other magical mix of hormones and pheromones that made us like ally cats when we were near each other.

So no, she wouldn’t fight me, no matter how stupid the urge was.

I also knew that if it came to a fight, she would fight. She was a fierce little warrior. I had trained her well. But this time, she wouldn’t be sparring with me. She would fight by my side. She would fight with me.

That knowledge did something to me. It changed me. It settled me in a way that made me realize I could stop. It made me realize I had been running my entire life.

Not just now. Not just with her. I’d been running from life. And maybe, just maybe, I had been running towards her.

Now that she was here, I wanted to stop running once and for all. I wanted to stay put. I was caught in a snare and I couldn’t be happier about it. It didn’t matter where we stopped, as long as she was there with me.

The familiar sound of an incoming FaceTime broke through the heaviness of my thoughts. I prayed that Cain would have answers. Or an idea. Anything.

Anastasia cast me a worried look, waiting for my go ahead.

Good girl, I thought before telling her what to do.

“Answer it.”

She did as I asked and Trace appeared, also looking worried. Well, fuck. That fucker never took anything seriously. I knew he loved my ass. He hid it well but I knew that fucker thought of me as a brother. He didn’t want to go to work without me there to watch his back, and keep him company.
